Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Pontificia Universidade Catolica-Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RIO), Brazil
The Pontificia Universidade Catolica (PUC-Rio), located in Rio de Janeiro, has had the privilege to hold a close relationship with UF Law since 2000. PUC-Rio is a private non-profit Catholic university. The Jesuit Company created the university in 1941 in order to develop knowledge based on humanistic values in Brazil. Now with approximately 10,000 undergraduate students, 2,500 graduate students and 5,000 extension students, PUC-Rio is internationally recognized as one of the top five universities in Brazil and one of the two best in Rio de Janeiro.
In view of the demands of the market, the course of law of PUC-Rio looks to shape professionals for contemporary law issues with strong concentration in Constitutional law, Commercial law, Civil law, International law, Criminal law and Labor law as well as the respective procedural spheres. The courses relate to the socio-legal environment in Brazil through the courses offered, such as, Mercosul Agreement, Comparative Constitutional Law, Philosophy of Law, Human Rights, International Law, Taxation of & Business Transaction, International Trade and the Environment.
With an intense cultural life, Rio De Janeiro is the perfect place for those who want to immerse themselves into the South American reality: plays, shows, concerts, exhibitions, street performances, scientific conferences and cultural debates. Prepare to have your senses engaged while in Rio. You’ll be seduced by a host of images: the joyous bustle of vendors at Sunday’s Feira Hippie (Hippie Fair); the tipsy babble at sidewalk cafés; the blanket of lights beneath Pão d’Açucar; the bikers, joggers, strollers, and power walkers who parade along the beach each morning. Living in this urban and cultural center, students will have ample opportunities to visit Brazilian institutions and learn first hand about the Brazilian culture. Students can choose from plays, exhibitions, scientific conferences, to cultural debates that take place in Rio de Janeiro. Students must be fluent in Spanish or Portuguese. Examinations are in Portuguese, unless otherwise indicated.
The program runs from August to mid December. The application deadline is in the month of February. Note that only credits will be transferred to a student’s record, not the grades themselves. The UF – Brazil Program is ABA approved and exclusive for UF law students. The opportunity to take a Portuguese intensive language program is available through PUC-Rio.
