2013 E-Discovery Conference – Presenter’s Profiles

Ralph Artigliere retired as a Circuit Judge from Florida’s Tenth Judicial Circuit in Bartow to teach and write. Artigliere graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1969 and the University of Florida Law School in 1977 (J.D., with high honors). Before his appointment to the bench in 2001, Artigliere was a 24-year trial lawyer handling primarily professional negligence, medical malpractice, and product liability cases. As a Circuit Judge, Artigliere served in the felony, family, probate, and civil trial divisions and was Administrative Judge of his Circuit’s civil and family divisions. Artigliere teaches in the Florida Judicial College, the Florida College of Advanced Judicial Studies, the Florida Circuit Judge’s Conference, The Florida Bar Advanced Trial Advocacy Course, the 2013 Sedona Conference® Cooperation Training Program, and various other continuing legal and judicial education programs nationally. Artigliere served on the Civil Procedure Rules Sub-Committee that drafted and presented the electronic discovery amendments that were adopted by the Florida Supreme Court in 2012. As a lawyer, Artigliere was AV® rated and a Florida Bar Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Artigliere was the recipient of the 2007 Anstead Award for Florida Board Certified Lawyer of the Year, 2006 Hoeveler Award for Professionalism as a Judge from the Florida Supreme Court Committee on Professionalism, 2005 Professionalism Award for the Tenth Judicial Circuit, and the 2011 Excellence in Writing Award from The Florida Bar Journal & News Editorial Board. Artigliere is a co-author of “Writing Jury Instructions in Florida” which is an Appendix in the officially published Florida Supreme Court Standard Jury Instructions, both Civil and Criminal. He is co-author with William Hamilton of the LexisNexis book entitled Florida e-Discovery and Evidence.

Martin helps clients meet legal requirements and provide insight into making more informed decisions based on the data and facts of a case.

Possessing more than 20 years of experience in both the legal and technical fields, Martin offers a consultative perspective for Nuix clients. As an attorney and technologist, he has created and implemented defensible processes through all stages of the EDRM process, and as a licensed attorney and counselor, he is certified to practice in California, Illinois and Michigan. Martin graduated from Michigan State University and holds LLM degrees from Boston University and McGeorge School of Law. Additionally, he possesses advanced certifications in IT (MCSE, MCITP), digital forensics and business continuity and compliance architecture.

Julie currently manages the Litigation Technology Department at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP. The department provides consultation, support, training, processing and production of e-discovery. She was awarded the 2011 Litigation and Practice Support Champion award by the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA). She serves on the ILTA Litigation and Practice Support Steering Committee, is the ILTA Litigation and Practice Support City Representative in Columbus, Ohio and is a working group member of the Sedona Conference. Julie also serves on the EDRM Advisory Committee and is a participant on the Metrics project. Julie has written articles on Vendor Selection and Production of Electronic Discovery. She also drafted the EDRM Production Standards in 2010. Julie is CEDS certified and is certified in all Summation applications, Sanction, Doculex, LAW 5.0, ITIL and Lean Six Sigma. She has a paralegal degree and over 20 years of experience working in law firms and a Fortune 500 litigation department.

Vorys: Vorys was established in 1909 and has grown to be one of the largest Ohio-based law firms with nearly 375 attorneys in six offices in Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Akron, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and Houston, Texas. Judge Jones was appointed a United States Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Florida on September 10, 2010, after having served as a United States Magistrate Judge in the Middle District of Florida for ten years. Judge Jones received his B.A. in 1975 from Boston University, his J.D. in 1981 from the University of Miami School of Law and his LL.M degree in International Law from New York University School of Law in 1983, graduating with highest honors.

Following graduation from New York University Judge Jones practiced commercial litigation in Florida for eighteen years, first as an associate and then as a partner at a large multi service firm in Miami, Florida, and after that, for approximately ten years as a name partner in a small commercial litigation firm in Miami.

Prior to his appointment as a United States Magistrate Judge, Judge Jones litigated a variety of complex commercial cases for banks, financial institutions and multi-national corporations in both state and federal courts throughout Florida as well as in other states. Notable among these cases was the representation of a client before the United States Supreme Court and the representation of a Miami based publicly traded company in an antitrust case in which a $100 million verdict was obtained, which was, at that time, the largest antitrust verdict in the history of the Southern District of Florida.

Since his appointment to the bench in 2000, Judge Jones has served on more than 15 court committees in the Middle and Northern Districts of Florida and was the first magistrate judge to be appointed to the Financial Disclosure Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States, where Judge Jones served with distinction for six years.

Browning Marean is a senior counsel in DLA Piper’s San Diego office. He is a member of the Litigation group and is co-chair of the Electronic Discovery Readiness and Response Group. Mr. Marean concentrates his practice in the areas of electronic discovery, professional responsibility and knowledge management. He is admitted to practice in California and Texas. Mr. Marean joined DLA Piper (then Gray Cary Ames & Frye) in 1969. He is an emeritus member of the California State Bar Law Practice Management Committee and the San Diego County Bar Association’s Legal Ethics committee. He has also served on the ABA Tech Show Planning Board.
Mr. Marean is an internationally known teacher and frequent lecturer on various topics including electronic discovery, international discovery, records retention, knowledge management and computer technology. He is co-author of the 2012-2013 edition of Electronic Discovery and Records Management Guide, Rules, Checklists and Forms, published by Thomson West, and Conducting Discovery in an Electronic World: Electronic Data and Discovery, published by California CEB’s Civil Discovery Practice. He has been named a San Diego Super Lawyer. Mr. Marean received his law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of Law and his undergraduate degree from Stanford University.

Dera Nevin is an e-discovery lawyer, and former civil litigator, with particular emphasis on corporate and cross-border securities litigation, including class proceedings and regulatory and enforcement proceedings. She has significant domestic arbitration and international law experience, including experience with the recognition and enforcement of judgments and arbitral awards. Dera Nevin specializes in complex large-scale e-discovery mandates, including structuring the collection and processing of data and the importation and exportation of data across provincial and international boundaries, ensuring compliance legal requirements including privacy legislation.

Tom O’Connor, a nationally known consultant, speaker and writer in the area of computerized litigation support systems, is a New England native who graduated from The Johns Hopkins University in 1972 with a BA in Political Science. After attending law school for one year at The University of Notre Dame, Tom returned to Baltimore and undertook a career as a paralegal specializing in complex litigation.
Sometime over the past 20 years, Tom found time to return to law school at night and earn a J.D. Most recently he has been active in electronic discovery efforts, assisting firms and corporate counsel in matters of retention policies, litigation holds and document exchange protocols.
Tom is a frequent lecturer on the subject of legal technology and is also a prolific writer, with numerous articles in legal publications and several books, most recently “Ediscovery for Small Cases” from the ABA.
He and his best friend Gayle, along with their son Seamus, the philosopher king of Western Washington University, hope someday to have their own float in a Mardi Gras parade down the Mississippi down in New Orleans, where Tom now resides.

Mr. Quartararo began his 20-year legal career as a litigation paralegal and case manager at large New York law firms, including Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom. He managed large-scale class action and securities litigations, international litigation and complex technology related projects involving computer forensics and all aspects of electronic discovery and trial presentation. In 2008, he joined Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP as a manager of litigation support, providing litigation technology support across multiple practice areas. Now the firm-wide Director of Litigation Support, Mr. Quartararo currently leads a staff of 10 project managers and technical analysts who provide consulting, litigation support, technology and training services to 350 attorneys and paralegals in New York, Miami and Los Angeles. At Stroock, he integrated project management principles into electronic discovery projects, and he is one of the principal authors of the Firm’s best practices on electronic discovery. He regularly consults with attorneys and Fortune 500 clients on all aspects of electronic discovery.

Mike has a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York and completed one year of law school at the University of London. He is a member of the Project Management Institute, a certified Project Management Professional, and a Certified E-Discovery Specialist. He is an adjunct professor and E-Discovery Advisory Board Member at Bryan University in Tempe, Arizona, and an active member of the International Legal Technology Association. George Socha is the president and founder of Socha Consulting LLC, an electronic discovery consulting firm. George is an advisor and expert witness and advisor focusing on the full range of electronic discovery activities.
