The Center for Governmental Responsibility’s Eleventh Annual Conference on Legal & Policy Issues in the Americas was held May 17 and 18, 2010, in Montevideo, Uruguay. The 2010 conference will feature day-long workshops and discussions on selected topics, including:

  • Trade, Business, and Dispute Settlement
  • Agro-Ranching and the Environment
  • Financial Crime & Street Crime
  • Comparative Perspectives on the Environmental/Human Rights Link in the Americas
  • Emerging Legal Issues in Uruguay and the Americas

The conference examined current legal issues in the hemisphere, while continuing to strengthen our partnerships throughout the region.

Creating a Consensus for Justice Reform in Peru

The University of Florida Levin College of Law’s Seventh Annual Legal and Policy Issues in the Americas Conference was held May 25-26, 2006, in Lima, Peru. It was sponsored by the UF Center for Governmental Responsibility and the UF Law & Policy in the Americas Program. Conference sponsors in Peru included the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, the Instituto de Defensa Legal and Justicia Viva.

The conference addressed the rule of law and justice reform throughout the Americas. Agenda items included justice reform in Peru, citizen security and human rights, alternative dispute resolution, economic integration, legal education and professionalism, emerging market standards, appellate systems, and property rights.

Participants in the conference included attorneys, judges, members of the academic and business communities, policy makers, and law enforcement representatives from throughout the Americas. Registration was limited to 100 attendees.

2005: 6th Annual Conference on Legal & Policy Issues in the Americas

The University of Florida Levin College of Law’s annual international meeting of Latin American experts, “Legal and Policy Issues in the Americas,” is scheduled for May 15-16, 2005, in Gainesville, Florida, at the Hilton University of Florida Conference Center. The Conference also includes an optional discussion about terrorism in the Americas on Tuesday, May 17, at the Levin College of Law.
The overall focus of the conference is to develop a template that we will use in analyzing justice systems in selected countries throughout the Americas, beginning with Peru. We will open with an examination of the current justice reforms in Peru, and examine the justice systems of Peru, Chile, and the United States. We will be identifying ways that justice systems complement or impede the challenges of Business Investment and Trade Negotiations, Terrorism, Dispute Resolution, and Property Rights. Participation in the conference is limited to 100 attendees, including lawyers, policy makers, law professors, judges, law students, business owners, and law enforcement representatives.

The conference agenda includes five plenary sessions covering five topics and two breakout sessions to discuss the formal presentations. The sessions include speakers from the United States, Peru, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Mexico.

2004: 5th Annual Conference on Legal & Policy Issues in the Americas

The University of Florida Levin College of Law’s annual international meeting of Latin American experts will be held outside the United States this year, for the first time. We have accepted the invitation of our long-time collaborator, the University of Costa Rica Faculty of Law, to travel to San Jose, Costa Rica, for the 2004 conference.
The conference agenda will include three general sessions and six workshops featuring specific legal and policy issues facing us today. The workshop sessions will include speakers from the United States, Costa Rica and the Americas.

Workshop topics for the 2004 conference are:

  1. Legal Education and Professionalism
  2. The Human Right to Property and Sustainable Development
  3. Decentralization, Property Taxation & Valuation
  4. Conflict Resolution
  5. Economic Integration in the Hemisphere
  6. Proportional Response Under Rule of Law to Organized Crime & Terrorism

We have reserved space for 150 participants in the conference, so early registration is important. The deadline for returning the attached registration form to us is April 24, 2004.
