Alumni Celebrate 2006 Football National Championship

This photo was taken at 8 a.m., right after the Gators won! The game was aired on Armed Forces Network and started at 4 a.m., but we all watched the whole thing! On the right is myself, Captain Peter Jennison (JD 04) and on the left is Major Charlie Vanzant, who is a second-generation Florida alum and is also the former chairman of the Clay County School Board. We are both deployed with the Florida National Guard's 1-111 Aviation Regiment ("Mako Sharks") out of Jacksonville in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and will be here until October 2007.  Submitted by Peter.j.jennison@kuwait.swa.army.mil

This photo is us shaking hands after hoisting the flag here at our base. The Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Ben Lacy, also a big Gator fan, and who's wife is a UF alum from 1989, said we should fly it all day! What a day it was! We are all so proud of the Gators and watching the game here really made us feel like we were at home, if even just for a little while. CPT Peter Jennison

A live 6-foot, 85-lb. lady gator who is the official mascot of the UF's(Arizona) Desert Gators alumni chapter.  Although she now lives in the Phoenix Herpetological Society's sanctuary in north Scottsdale (www.phoenixherp.com), she was raised as a house pet in California -- she walks on a leash, is housebroken and utterly acclimated to human contact. She comes to occasional game viewing parties with the Desert Gators, visits many area schools to help her handlers teach kids about ecology and our environment, and was a huge hit during both the recent Gator pep rally and the Sunshine Network's pre-game show. For Christmas, my parents gave my boyfriend and I tickets to the National Championship game and the trip to go along with it.  The four of us went and had a great time at the game!  Submitted by susan@thebexleys.com

After the game, still inside the stadium, my boyfriend proposed!  It was really a special time for all of us.  Go Gators!!! Submitted by susan@thebexleys.com

This is Thomas, who is 6 weeks old. He is definitely the cutest Gator fan EVER!!!! Can you tell? He's thrilled that we won!! I found out I was pregnant with him the night the Gators won the NCAA basketball championship. He's destined for UF in 18 years. AND he was born the day of the Florida State game! (My hubby is a die hard Nole- we just try to ignore him.) What else could a Gator fan ask for??? Submitted by Erin Charlton Achey, JD '01

Monique Agia, JD 94, and Tony Fineman, JD 94, are getting ready to go inside to watch the Gators destroy Ohio State. We were definately out numbered in terms of the OSU to UF fan ratio, but there were very few OSU fans still in the stadium at the end. Go Gators!!   Submitted by Tony Fineman

This picture was taken early and Matt Borstein, Ohio friend, was still confident. His confidence didn't last long as the crushing Gator offense and defense destroyed the Buckeyes.   Submitted by Tony Fineman

(right to left): Kaylee Grippando, Natasha Strump, Marielle Ogilby, Wesley Strump, and Ryan Grippando are all future Gators (and present Gator fans) that were allowed to stay up way past their bedtime to watch the Gator whooppin' of Ohio State. Marielle Ogilby is my stepdaughter and the daughter of Margaret Gonzalez Ogilby and the granddaughter of US District Court Judge Jose Gonzalez (all Gators). Kaylee and Ryan Grippando are the children of Jim Grippando, a 1982 graduate of the law school. Wesley, Natasha, and Georgia Strump are the kids of Walter Strump, a Gator (but not a lawyer!). I have to share a scene I witnessed upon leaving the stadium.
A University of Florida student, (sober, I might add,) wearing blue jeans and a gator sweatshirt, was just leaving the stadium about an hour after the game. He was walking by himself with both hands held high, both forefingers extended. Speaking to no one in particular, he chanted, over and over, "We are #1; # 1 in basketball, #1 in football, first time ever. We are #1; # 1 in basketball, #1 in football..." His heavy accent clearly disclosed he was originally from India. He was wearing a button, similar to many, indicating that he was a member of the Gator Nation, except his button had been carefully and quite professionally altered. Nation had a line through it and overlaying it was the word "WORLD". This young man was clearly part of the GATOR WORLD! If there had been a camera crew around, this scene would have preserved for prosperity that the influence of the school is not limited to a mere nation! It was wonderful! Submitted by Paul Raymond
