Under the supervision of Legal Skills Professor Jeffrey T. Grater, Certified Legal Interns, as part of the "full representation" offering, may provide legal counseling, draft pleadings, motions, orders, judgments, and other legal documents for eligible clients. They may also represent their clients in negotiations, mediations, hearings and trials. Actual legal work will vary, depending on the timing and complexity of each case.
Clinical interns work together in teams of two, and each intern usually sits as first chair counsel in two to three cases at any given time during the semester they spend in the Clinics. They are responsible for their clients and their cases even after the end of the semester, until the next semester begins. Cases handled by clinic interns include legal issues ranging from alimony reinforcement, custody, division of property and dissolution of marriage to housing, paternity, visitation, and probate.
Eligible clients in family law (civil) cases apply for representation and are assigned a Certified Legal Intern from the initial interview through non-jury trial. As authorized under the Student Practice Rule, interns are supervised by faculty who are also experienced practitioners and members of The Florida Bar.
