Legal Skills Professor Peggy F. Schrieber, an experienced practitioner and member of The Florida Bar, teaches and supervises Certified Legal Interns practicing on the cutting-edge of family law through the new approach of "unbundling". Interns determine with their family law pro se clients what limited legal services they will provide, ranging from legal advice, assisting with mediation, and limited court representation. An additional part of their training includes introduction by family therapists to therapeutic approaches focused on resolving family conflict in less adversarial ways.
Interns in this clinic first take a preparatory course covering the skills of interviewing and counseling and aspects of Florida family law most commonly at issue in our pro se cases (custody, visitation, paternity, child support, the marital home, domestic violence, and jurisdictional issues). The following semester they work in teams of two and assist eligible clients who have elected to go before the court pro se ("for self") in a family law case in the Eighth Judicial Circuit Family Court. Clients are often referred to the clinic by the court or can apply directly for assistance. Cases are accepted based on income eligibility and complexity.
