Florida Bioregions
Between the "Mullet Latitudes" at the intersection of nature and culture
What is a bioregion? It depends on who you ask. For our purposes, a bioregion is a region whose "boundaries" are shaped by the confluence of natural and cultural resources, where distinctive natural characteristics or phenomenon have shaped the cultural influences of the region. This may be represented by a physiography that people identify with (The Suwannee Valley), by a metaphor (Mullet Latitudes), by a cultural identity (The Conch Republic), or by the imagination of one of those shaped by their own bioregion (Oklawaha County). Bioregions seldom coincide with contemporary political boundaries, but may sometimes coincide with historic ones (Mosquito County).
Project writers Tom Ankersen and Lars Andersen have written a series of regional environmental history essays to accompany the multimedia presentation. These essays may be found by clicking on the bioregions highlighted below. For further information about the multimedia project contact Natural Florida producer/director Steve Robitaille at steve.robitaille@santafe.cc.fl.us.
