Technical Assistance for Non-Governmental Organizations

The non-governmental sector plays a significant role in advancing the conservation agenda through legal and policy advocacy, environmental education, science and active conservation. Environmental groups must comply with a variety of legal and financial requirements from basic forms of incorporation to compliance with Internal Revenue Service regulations. The Clinic can assist these organizations in their compliance requirements.

In the Spring of 1999 the Conservation Clinic assisted a consortium of local environmental groups with the legal framework and administrative design for a watershed based advocacy group for East Florida river basin. The project entailed consultation with stakeholders to determine the most appropriate institutional framework based on their needs, drafting model legal instruments of incorporation to reflect those needs, and researching the legal requirements and alternatives for gaining tax-exempt status. In addition, the Clinic provided technical assistance to a small private foundation in its IRS reporting requirements. The research reports and model instruments linked to this page are provided for informational and illustrative purposes and should not be utilized without consultation with a licensed attorney based on the specific needs of the individual or entity seeking assistance.
