The Town of Marineland Sustainable Tourism Initiative

In the Fall and Spring of 2000-01, the Conservation Clinic continued its work with the Town of Marineland, Florida, home of Florida's first tourism theme park. With support from the Department of Community Affairs “Remarkable Coastal Communities Initiative,” the small Northeast Florida Town has been pursuing a sustainability vision. The Town retained the Clinic to assist it in drafting the State's first Sustainable Tourism Element for its Comprehensive Plan. Comprehensive planning is a requirement for local governments under Florida Law. While tourism is not a required element under the law, communities may pursue optional elements. Marineland's Sustainable Tourism element will be the State's first comprehensive plan element specifically addressing tourism.
