Wildfire Mitigation Model Ordinance
In Fall 2002, Pandion Systems, Inc. retained the Conservation Clinic to produce a Annotated Model Wildfire Mitigation Ordinance for inclusion as Chapter 6 in the Florida Department of Community Affairs Best Development Practices for Wildfire Mitigation document scheduled for release in late 2003. The document will be used to build the guidelines that will provide target audiences with the methods and information that they need to make informed practical decisions related to Best Development Practices for wildfire mitigation in Florida. The Conservation Clinic project team, Justin Payne and Jay Welch, reviewed several existing ordinances including those of Flagler and Indian River Counties in Florida, as well as various county and local ordinances from the western United States and Canada. The team adapted the existing law to the unique geographical and ecological characteristics of the Wildland-Urban interface in Florida, incorporating regulatory approaches such as overlay zoning to protect Florida communities from future uncontrolled wildfire.
