Gainesville attorney W. Scott Van Alstyne Jr., UF Professor of Law Emeritus, has been inducted as a Fellow of the Wisconsin Law Foundation. Fellows are nominated for outstanding attainment in the practice of law, contributions to the welfare of their communities, and service in the advancement of the legal profession in Wisconsin.

In the spotlight: Slobogin

This week, Associate Dean and Stephen C. O’Connell Professor Christopher Slobogin will teach a one-day program sponsored by the American Board of Forensic Psychology in San Diego, and also will present a paper, “Peeping Techno-Toms: Seeing Through Kyllo’s Rules Governing Technological Surveillance of the Home,” at a symposium at the University of Minnesota Law School. He received additional national distinction recently when the U.S. Supreme Court cited an American Psychiatric Association statement on the insanity defense from his book, Psychological Evaluations for the Courts (2d ed. 1997) (with G. Melton, J. Petrila, and N. Poythress), in Kansas v. Crane, a case dealing with the degree of volitional impairment the state must show before it can preventively detain a sexual predator.

Law School In PBS Documentary on UF

A half-hour documentary on UF will air on statewide and southeastern United States’ PBS-TV stations — and locally on Cox Channel 12 (WUFT-TV Channel 5) — Sunday (Feb. 10), at 12:30 p.m. During the 30-minute program — part of the regular Florida Crossroads Series — producers report that major aspects of the university will be featured, including the Colleges of Law and Medicine and Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Law school officials are hopeful a good portion of footage filmed on campus in November will be included in the section devoted to the Levin College of Law. This includes an interview with Dean Jon Mills, and portions of a Moot Court trial, Gator TeamChild clinic and one of Professor Sharon Rush’s Constitutional Law II classes. Rush said the students were “wonderful and well-prepared” for the filming, which lasted about an hour. Their impromptu discussion of Bush v. Gore was “exciting and unplanned,” Rush said. “We’re optimistic the two or three minutes that could be devoted to the law school will help reinforce our quality programs and faculty/staff,” said Communications Director Stan Huguenin, who assisted producers with arrangements. The award-winning Florida Crossroads is in its 14th season. It originates from and is produced by WFSU-TV in Tallahassee. Periodically it devotes an entire program to “… on Campus,” which features state universities, including interviews with educators, administrators, students and alumni to “tell the story” of the institution and its locale. Crossroads on Campus explores strengths of Florida’s public universities and discovers what sets them apart. The series so far has covered seven of the 10 public state universities. Florida International University (FIU) in Miami and Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in Boca Raton are planned for later this season.
