Human Rights Initiative Brings Ethiopian Royalty to UFLaw

Members of the Ethiopian Royal family, including Crown Prince Zere Yacob Asfa Wossen (right, with attendent), visited last week to explore law school resources and interest in human rights issues. “The prince launched the Ethiopia Peace Foundation to promote repatriation for refugees, including many Ras Tafarins who aspire to return to Africa. The family also hopes to educate and make resources available for African descendants throughout the diaspora wishing to return,” said Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations Associate Director Desta Meghoo- Peddie (second from left, with Dean Jon Mills). “The UN World Conference Against Racism states descendants’ rights to return should be considered under the banner of a reparation effort,” she added. “I was asked to advise the Crown Prince on this initiative and research U.S. office locations.” The prince is the 227th direct descendant of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. The family fled into exile in North America and Europe after a communist coup in 1974, and are supported in part by other royal families.

Stephen C. O’Connell Professor Christopher Slobogin spoke on “The Jurisprudence of Dangerousness” Jan. 22 at Hastings College of Law, where he is visiting this semester. He will participate Feb. 7 in a conference on the insanity defense organized by the Texas Legislature and Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians in the wake of Andrea Yates’ conviction on charges of murdering her five children.

Professor Lars Noah published “Informed Consent and the Elusive Dichotomy Between Standard and Experimental Therapy,” in the American Journal of Law & Medicine; and “Enshrining a Constitutional Right to Engage in Pharmaceutical Advertising” in FDLI Update. At the request of the National Academy of Sciences, he will serve as an external reviewer for an Institute of Medicine’s Committee report on “Implications of Dioxin in the Food Supply.”
