Levin, Mabie & Levin Professor Berta Esperanza Hernandez- Truyol published an article titled “Asking the Family Question” in Florida Law Quarterly and will be presenting her work with Jane Larson on “Prostitution — Voluntary Bondage? On Work, Slavery and Human Rights,” at the Global Impact of Feminist Legal Theory conference in San Diego.

Assistant Professor Christopher Peterson’s book Taming the Sharks: Toward a Cure for the High Cost Credit Market was selected by Academia Magazine as a recommended title for Winter 2005. Recommendations are given to only 10 new, topical, authoritative and accessible books from the legal academy per quarter. Peterson’s book was described as a “compelling overview, which takes you on a tour of the plight of the working poor.”

Samuel T. Dell Research Scholar/ Professor Winston Nagan, along with Senior Research Fellow Craig Hammer, published “The Changing Character of Sovereignty in International Law and International Relations,” in 43 Columbia Journal of Transnational Law 142-187 (2004).

Major Gift for Real Estate Law

Donation from The Fund will provide $300,000 for UF law programs.

A major gift announced last week by Attorneys’ Title Insurance Fund, Inc. (The Fund) will help Florida deal with the state’s percolating real estate market and develop knowledgeable lawyers to serve that market.

After it is matched by the state, the gift from The Fund, the nation’s first Florida Bar-related title insurance underwriter, will provide $300,000 for teaching and faculty research in the area of real estate law at the Levin College of Law.

“The demand continues to escalate for well-educated legal professionals versed in the complexities of real estate law. This endowment will provide much-needed teaching and faculty research support in this key area,” said Dean Robert Jerry. “The gift also works hand-in-hand with UF President Bernard Machen’s initiative to make UF one of the nation’s premier research universities by attracting and retaining high-quality faculty and giving them the tools they need to excel.”

This endowment is one of five — totaling $1 million — the company is establishing at Florida-based law schools. Over the last four decades, The Fund has provided preeminent law schools with an annual endowment to promote real property education. In addition to the $242,800 in curriculum grants the company has provided to the UF law school over the past 40 years (including this most recent gift), The Fund conducts an annual law student award competition open to law students across the state — providing a monetary grant to the student submitting the best legal paper on the topic of real estate law.

“UF’s law school has a distinguished national reputation and a tradition of academic excellence. With this instructional endowment, we are carrying out The Fund’s mission to preserve and facilitate the practice of real estate law,” said Charles J. Kovaleski, president of The Fund. “Real estate drives Florida’s economy. This gift represents The Fund’s reinvestment in the legal foundation on which that critical piece of Florida’s economy stands.”

In addition to The Fund’s expansive continuing education program for real estate attorneys, the company conducts a title examination workshop for students at law schools across the state. The workshop provides students with the methods to help them accurately examine titles in an orderly and effective manner. It also helps them easily identify problems to look for when issuing title insurance as real estate attorneys.
