The Restoration of Civil Rights Project is having a training session on Thursday at 5 p.m. in HOL 285D. The RCR is a volunteer group based out of the law school that helps members of the community with felony convictions apply to have their civil rights — including the right to vote — restored. The RCR group provides application assistance at workshops held once a month. RCR is a low-commitment way for law students to make a difference in the community. If you plan to attend the training session, contact Sherley Jean.

The Center for Career Development and the International Law Society will host “Legal Careers in International Law” on Wednesday at noon in HOL 285C. Guest speaker Phillip Buhler is an attorney with the Jacksonville firm Moseley, Prichard, Parrish, Knight and Jones. Buhler has advised a broad spectrum of insurance and business clients based in Europe and the Far East as well as the United States. He is regularly involved in litigation requiring discovery procedures abroad and has represented clients in Latin America, Europe, South Africa and Japan. Buhler has authored a number of articles and a book on issues of transnational litigation, international, environmental and maritime law. At this event students can learn about legal careers involving international issues, get advice on how to stand out to employers in these fields, and learn about how to get involved in international legal professional organizations while in law school. Log on to Symplicity and RSVP under the “events” tab to attend.

The Levin College of Law is holding a free barbecue for all students, faculty and staff tomorrow from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Marcia Whitney Schott Courtyard. The food is from Hill’s Bar-B-Que in Gainesville and the event is sponsored by the Gene K. and Elaine Glasser Endowment. The Glassers are both UF alumni and sponsor the barbecue every year. They hope the annual event will foster a greater sense of community among people at the law school. “The law school education I received at the University of Florida has greatly influenced my professional and personal life, creating lasting memories with my friends,” said Gene Glasser, a Fort Lauderdale attorney who received his Juris Doctor degree from UF Law in 1972. The event is a great chance for incoming students to get to know one another and feel like a part of the law school community.

Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s visit Sept. 12 isn’t the only recent event she has participated in that had a connection to UF Law. Last month, Dean Emeritus and CGR Director Jon Mills moderated a panel at the American Bar Association’s Annual Meeting in Toronto where O’Connor was a participant. The topic of the discussion was the current crisis in judicial funding. The panelists discussed the problems contributing to insufficient court funding and how to address the issue. Mills stressed the fact that because of underfunding, justice is delayed for many, which equates to justice being denied for many. “There was a headline the other day: ‘Liberty and justice for some,’” Mills said. “That is not a headline we want to see again.” The panel was also comprised of Mary McQueen, president of the National Center for State Courts; David Boies and Theodore B. Olson, co-chairs of the Task Force on Preservation of the Justice System; and Rod Snow, president of the Canadian Bar Association. The recap of the discussion can be found on the ABA website. And the complete discussion is archived in two parts, here and here.
