The library will be open every day from 7:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. until Dec. 13. On Dec. 14, the library will open at 7:30 a.m., and will close at 5 p.m. It will be closed Dec. 15 and Dec. 16. The Lic will be open Dec. 17-21 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be closed Dec. 22 through Jan. 1 and will reopen Jan. 2 at 8 a.m.

3L publishes scholarly book chapters

Caroline Joan S. Picart (3L, joint J.D. and M.A. in Women’s Studies) has three refereed scholarly book chapters and one refereed scholarly article forthcoming in 2013.  The book chapters are:  “Media Myths Regarding Serial Killers: A Gothic Criminology” in The Poetics of Crime – Excursions into Creative Criminologies, Michael Hviid Jacobsen, ed. (Ashgate, forthcoming 2013); “Is Life Beautiful?: Humor, Horror, Fantasy, and History” in The Fantastic in Holocaust Literature, Judith Kerman and John Edgar Browning, eds., (McFarland, expected Spring 2013); and “The Documentary Impulse and Reel/Real Horror” in A Companion to the Horror Film, Harry Benshoff, ed. (Wiley-Blackwell, forthcoming, 2013). The article is forthcoming in a journal of Communication: “Reflections on Power and Intersectionality,” Qualitative Inquiry, forthcoming, Spring, 2013 (Edited by Lonnie Athens).

LIC Notes: CLEs in the LIC

It is a little known fact that the Legal Information Center has Continuing Legal Education materials in its collection. While it receives all of The Florida Bar CLE course books, it also acquires a few CDs and DVDs that attorneys can use to obtain CLE credit.  Each year, The Florida Bar sends all public Florida law libraries a free copy of the Survey of Florida Law CLE for distribution to patrons and Florida Bar members. In addition, the LIC collects CLEs that are of interest to UF Law faculty and students, such as its recent acquisition, the Practice Management Track of the 6^th Annual Solo & Small Firm Conference – The Extraordinary Lawyer: Minding Your Own Business. This CLE focuses on building a law practice, which many students and alumni may find of interest in the current economy.  If you would like to see our current CLE holdings, the list is available at: http://guides.uflib.ufl.edu/CLEs. Stay tuned for Dean Jerry’s Music Night 2013

Watch FlaLaw in January for the announcement of the spring scheduling of Dean Jerry’s “Music Night 2013” at his house. The rules are that any student who participates must bring a dessert and perform a musical piece.  Faculty who participate must comply with a substantially identical rule, which often results in the appearance of a kazoo band. When it’s announced, sign-up will be first-come, first-served. If you’re interested, you might want to do a little practicing over break. (But the dean says: Don’t over-prepare; this is informal and meant to be fun – i.e., it’s definitely “recital-lite.”)

Moot court team elects new exec board; Dylan Shea receives award

The UF Moot Court Team has elected new members to the executive board this spring:

The team voted Dylan Shea to receive the Gaither Award for the most outstanding team member.

Virgil Hawkins, the alter-ego of the popular African-American comic character Static in the regular DC Universe is making his first appearance in the new “Terror Titans” miniseries. Named after Virgil Hawkins, who lead the fight to desegregate the University of Florida College of Law, the character is returning 16 years after he starred in his first solo book, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

Research assistant needed for spring & summer 2009

Research assistant needed for spring and summer 2009, with possibility of continued employment in 2009-2010, to assist Dr. Cliff Jones with preparation of book manuscript concerning private antitrust litigation in the European Union. Approximately 10 to 20 hours per week; prior experience with antitrust law, European Community law, national law of EU member states, and international research materials a plus but not required; Lexis skills required; familiarity with Excel and CaseMap software a plus; facility with one or more EU languages in addition to English also a plus but not required. This position is open until filled, but review of applications will begin Feb. 26, 2009.

Space for prayer or privacy

Everyone knows that there are study rooms available for checkout in the library. But did you know that there is one room dedicated to special purposes? The meditation/ lactation room is meant for individuals who need a private space for prayer or meditation, or for lactating mothers who want privacy. The room is available for law student checkout 30 minutes at a time. Inquire at the Circulation Desk to check out the room key or for more information.

Remember to protect your belongings on campus

Please remember that when you leave your belongings unattended in the library (or anywhere on campus) you run a real risk of theft. Even if you trust your colleagues, consider that savvy thieves from the surrounding area know that students in the library often leave their things for a few minutes, and it takes less than a minute to pick up a bag or a computer and walk away, often completely unnoticed. The library staff encourages you to protect your stuff and don’t leave it unattended.

Levin College of Law Faculty and Student Art Show

Calling all student and faculty artists. We are now accepting artwork in any medium (ie. sculpture, painting, photography) for the fourth annual Levin College of Law Faculty and Student Art Show.
