Externship Program for Fall and Summer 2008 Discussed at Jan. 23 Meeting
The Levin College of Law Externship Program for the Summer and Fall 2008 Semesters will be discussed at a meeting on Wednesday, January 23 at noon in Room 180. All students who are interested in an externship should attend the meeting.
Externships offer students learning opportunities not found in the classroom and expose them to a variety of opportunities in the legal profession while they earn academic credit. Student externs work under the supervision of a licensed attorney at the externship site and also engage in guided reflection and other academic exercises with the faculty member who supervises the externship. Placements are available at government agencies, in judges' chambers, and with nonprofit legal institutions; students cannot earn externship credit for work in private law firms and for-profit organizations. Externship positions must be unpaid. The amount of credit available varies from externship to externship and they are graded on a pass/fail basis.
To be eligible for an externship, a student must have completed his or her first year of law school and must be in good academic standing in the semester preceding the externship. Students cannot participate in an externship and a clinic in the same semester.
There are a number of regularly offered externships that have been approved by the Curriculum Committee and are supervised by full-time faculty members. Students must apply for and be selected for these externships. At the meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 23, students will receive information about these externships and about the application and selection processes.
Students cannot create their own externships. A faculty member who has an academic/curricular relationship to the externship, and who will serve as the faculty supervisor must propose any new externship. Faculty supervisors must be full-time faculty members and cannot be adjunct faculty members, non-faculty administrators, or non-faculty researchers. In addition, the College of Law Curriculum Committee must approve any new externship before it can be offered. The deadline for submission of proposals to the Curriculum Committee for new externships for the Summer or Fall 2008 semester is Friday, March 21.
