Moot Court Teams Take Home Awards From ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition In Dallas

DallasTwo University of Florida Levin College of Law Justice Campbell Thornal Moot Court teams won coveted awards at the Dallas, Texas regional of the American Bar Association National Appellate Advocacy Competition March 1.

The team of Dante Trevisani, Joey Troendle, and Giselle Mammana won the award for Second Best Overall Brief. The team ultimately advanced to the Regional Semi-Finals as the overall number two seed after the preliminary rounds. Jennifer Jones, out of a total of sixty competitors, took home the award of 10th Best Overall Advocate. Finally, the team of Michael Schuster, Jennifer Jones, and Elizabeth Faist won a spot to compete in the National Finals of the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition in Chicago on April 3-5. Pictured from left to right are Troendle, Mammana, Trevisani, Faist, Schuster, and Jones.

The teams argued two issues: 1) whether the Board of Immigration of Appeals decision to streamline a case was committed to agency discretion by law and 2) whether the Board’s decision to deny asylum to an ex-spouse was entitled to Chevron deference.

The two teams spent many hours writing their briefs and practicing oral arguments. They received assistance from Professors William Page, Alyson Flournoy, Leanne Pflaum, and Adjunct Legal Drafting Instructor Deb Cupples.

There are over 180 teams competing in the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition nationwide, making the competition the largest appellate advocacy competition in the United States. Only 24 Regional Champions advance to the National Finals. Advancing to the Nationals Finals demonstrates that UF Law’s Justice Campbell Thornal Moot Court team is one of the foremost teams in the United States.

This victory follows a previous win by another UF Law team in Washington, D.C. Future competitions include the ABA National Finals in Chicago April 3 – 5, and the St. Johns/Duberstein Bankruptcy Competition to be held in New York City March 8-10. An informational session for first year law students interested in trying out for the team will be held later this semester.
