Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to Visit UF Levin College of Law Wednesday, March 26
University of Florida law students will have the opportunity to meet and ask questions of former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright when she visits the UF Levin College of Law at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, for a special event in 355B Holland Hall. She will discuss the state of the presidency and her new book, Memo To The President Elect: How We Can Restore America's Reputation and Leadership. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and open to all UF Law students, faculty and staff. This event is closed to the general public due to space considerations. Albright was the 64th Secretary of State of the United States. In 1997, she was named the first woman Secretary of State and became, at that time, the highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government. She is expected to discuss topics such as the qualities and skills needed for the next president, and the global challenges that the next president will face, including the wars in Airaq and Afghanistan, peace negotiations in the Middle East, and restoring America’s reputation. Professionalism Symposium Gives Students Chance to Discuss Issues with Practitioners
Prominent alumni, faculty and law students will gather at the University of Florida Levin College of Law Friday, March 28, for this year’s Professionalism Symposium. Sponsored by a generous gift from attorney David B. Mishael of Miami and co-hosted by the Eighth Judicial Circuit Bar Association and UF Law, the symposium gives students the chance to discuss issues of professionalism, ethics and integrity in the law with judges and
practitioners. The event typically draws more than 100 students and dozens of local attorneys. This year’s keynote presentation will be delivered by Edward M. Waller Jr., an attorney with Fowler White Boggs Banker in Tampa. Waller received his bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in 1964 and his J.D. from the University of Chicago in 1967. His presentation is entitled "Professionalism: The Legacy of Atticus Finch—Higher Standards For New and Experienced Lawyers Alike."

Stephanie Coontz to Deliver Weyrauch Distinguished Lecture in Family Law March 26
Stephanie Coontz, professor, Evergreen State College and director of research and education of the Council on Contemporary Families, will deliver the second annual Weyrauch Distinguished Lecture in Family Law at noon Wednesday, March 26, in the Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom (180 Holland Hall). Coontz, a social historian who is nationally known for her work on the history of marriage, has been deeply involved in the litigation and public debate over same-sex marriage. She is perhaps best known for her book, The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap. She most recently published Marriage, A History: From Obedience to Intimacy, or How Love Conquered Marriage. The title of her lecture is "Courting Disaster: The Historical Revolution in Marriage." Presented by the Center on Children and Families, the lecture is named in honor of Professor Walter O. Weyrauch, internationally known for his work in foreign and family law. Weyrauch came to the United States from Germany in 1952 and joined the UF law faculty in 1957 as an associate professor of law. Today, he is a distinguished professor of law and Stephen C. O’Connell Chair at the law school. A reception will immediately follow the lecture in the Faculty Dining Room.

Career Spotlight: Sylvia Walbolt
While following in the footsteps of a fellow UF Law alumni, Sylvia Walbolt (JD 63) found her passion for pro bono work and created a legacy that will undoubtedly inspire future lawyers. As a young lawyer in the beginning of her career, Walbolt intently watched her mentor and UF Law alumnus William Reece Smith, Jr. (JD 49), who is known as Mr. Pro Bono throughout the country, provide legal counsel for the less fortunate. Seeing the difference he made in individuals’ lives and the satisfaction he received from his experience, Walbolt was motivated to do her part as a lawyer. A proud "Double-Gator," Walbolt’s motivation to help the poor stems from her strong belief that lawyers are very privileged to have the opportunity to practice law and have the obligation to uphold their oath of office by assisting the oppressed. "There are so many unmet legal needs of the true disadvantaged," she said.
