**Important!! The first weekend of the term the library will be CLOSED.
Saturday is the first home football game. Sunday we will be closed in observance of Labor Day.
Printing
The UF campus technology center (known as CIRCA) has installed a new printing network for campus. There are a few things that are a little different about printing from the computers in the library and the cafeteria, so be sure to check the signs for instructions. Even more important, if you’re a returning student and you plan to print from your laptop at the law school, you will have to set up printing all over again. Please stop at the front desk in the library and pick up a handout with instructions.
Technology Fridays!
Every Friday at 2:00 through the end of October, a librarian will be waiting at the Reference Desk available to help you with anything technology related. We’ll help you set up your printing, show you how to use the scanners, answer your Lexis and Westlaw questions, help you get on CALI, or anything else you want help with. If you need help but can’t make it on Fridays at 2:00, call the Reference Desk at 273-0723 and make an appointment.
New Whiteboards in Study Rooms
All the study rooms have new whiteboards installed. Dry erase marker kits will be available for checkout at the front desk when you check out your room key. All the policies that apply for checking out room keys will be the same for the marker kits.
On-Campus Interviewing
Be aware that study rooms are sometimes taken by Career Services during the first two months of the semester for interviewing, and therefore are not available for student use during the day. This will be done by the end of October, and of course, nights and weekends the rooms are always available.
New weekend hours
Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. — 6:00 p.m.
Sundays, 10:00 a.m. — 11:30 p.m.
We hope these hours will accommodate your needs. We will be conducting a survey about library hours during the fall semester, and we hope you will give us input about when you prefer the library to be open.
Closed on home football Saturdays
Unfortunately, the library will not be open every Saturday in the fall. When the University is hosting a football game, the library will be closed. This is primarily due to parking and security issues, which are very challenging during football games. The law school has been working with the Athletic Association to try to address these problems, but they have not been resolved yet.
New employees
Jessica de Perio Wittman is a Reference Librarian who started working here in January of this year. She has a J.D. from Seattle University and received her library degree from SUNY Buffalo. She is teaching Advanced Legal Research this fall, and working on developing distance education classes. Her office is right in the middle of the Reference area.
Renee Weatherholt is the new Circulation Assistant, who started working in the law library in June. You will see her a lot at the front desk, helping with Reserves and the study rooms, checking out books, and everything else. She is tremendously helpful and smart, and is currently working on a master’s degree in library science.
Elizabeth Outler is not a new employee, but her office has moved from the Reference area to the hallway next to the TV in the lobby. Her new title is Head of Public Services. If you have anything (library-related) to complain about, you can talk to Elizabeth!
New scanners
We have two new scanners that are available for you to use for free. They work for scanning images and for searchable text, and they can be used as a substitute for photocopying or faxing. They are attached to computers in the Reference area and there are signs and handouts available for instructions. Use of the scanners is something you can come to Technology Fridays (see above) to learn about or get help with.
New lost book policy
In July the University Libraries instituted a new lost book policy. Whenever a book has been overdue for 40 days, it is considered lost, and the person is billed for the overdue fine (usually $10) plus the replacement cost for the book. The new policy is that the replacement cost will now be the actual cost of replacing the book, plus a $35 processing fee. If the book cannot be replaced, the default amount billed will be $100. The law library will wait 30 days after a person is billed for a lost book before ordering a replacement. Once a book has been replaced, it is too late for a person to return the lost book.
New food & drink policy
The library will not pay attention to the drinks you bring anymore, but we ask you not to eat food in the library. There are big problems with food trash, not the least of which is the vermin it attracts. We also encourage you to carry drinks in reusable cups, bottles and mugs to help reduce trash. This is less of a burden on our janitorial staff, it is better for the environment and these types of containers are less likely to spill. Thanks for your cooperation with this.
New Loislaw
We have a new subscription to Loislaw, which is a small competitor for Lexis and Westlaw. It has some things that Lexis and Westlaw don’t have, and it is considerably less expensive. If you are interested in trying it out, come to the Reference Desk to get the access code, which authorizes you to set up your own user account and password. Or come to Technology Friday for more information!
New CALI CD’s
Have you heard of CALI? If not, you really should check it out! CALI stands for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction, and it has over 700 interactive online tutorials for virtually every legal topic. We have CD’s to give away that have all of the up-to-date CALI tutorials. You can use the CALI Web site once you have the registration code. Come to the Reference Desk for a CD or a registration code! Or come to Technology Friday for more information!
