Environmental & Land Use Law Program News There will be an informational meeting for the Environmental and Land Use Law Program, noon-1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 29, in Room 355D Holland Hall.
Students who attend will also have the chance to meet and talk with some of the ELULP faculty and to get individual advice on course selection for summer and fall and career development guidance. All students with an interest are encouraged to attend, but especially first-year students—this is the ideal opportunity to get the best possible information to plan your academic program for your second year. This is an excellent opportunity for currently enrolled certificate students to get answers to questions about certificate requirements, course availability, etc. Environmental Program Potluck Reception There will be a potluck reception for all Environmental & Land Use Law students and faculty at the home of Professor Mary Jane Angelo at 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 7. Environmental Moot Court Tryouts: Application Deadline Sept. 7 Interested in environmental law? Want to hone your brief-writing and appellate advocacy skills? Second-year students have the opportunity to try out for a coach in training position on the Environmental Moot Court team that will represent the University of Florida at the National Environmental Moot Court Competition in February 2008 in White Plains, NY. The student coach travels to the 2008 competition to support the team and participate in the 2009 competition as a full team member. This year over 70 teams participated in this national competition. The application process includes a written submission (resume and argument section of your brief from Appellate Advocacy) and an oral argument tryout. Written submissions are due Friday, Sept. 7, by 4 p.m., in Room 319 Holland Hall. Oral argument tryouts will be held Sept. 10-11. For complete details, email Lena Hinson at elulp@law.ufl.edu. CSRRR Presents 'When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts' Aug. 29 The UF Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations will mark the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina Aug. 29 with an all-day showing of Spike Lee's documentary, "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts."
IPTLA to Hold Officer Elections Meeting The Intellectual Property and Technology Law Association (IPTLA) will have its 2007-08 officer elections meeting, 6-6:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 30, in Room 283 Holland Hall. Available positions include president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. IPTLA serves students interested in intellectual property or technology-related law. Participation in IPTLA is an excellent way to learn about opportunities in intellectual property law, summer associate positions and the patent bar, and to meet and socialize with other students. First-year students are especially welcome. Legal Information Center Closed Saturday The Legal Information Center (LIC) will be closed Saturday, Sept. 1, and all Saturdays on which the University of Florida hosts a home football game (Sept. 8, 15 and 29; and Nov. 3, 17, and 24). If you are looking for study space on those dates, most other campus libraries will be open. Bear in mind that you will not be able to park on campus, and will have to navigate large crowds.
Library West, which is the main library for the UF, has a beautiful new facility, with large study areas on the first through third floors, and the entire sixth floor is restricted to graduate students only. Visit their Circulation Desk (at the top of the escalators) to get your UF ID card activated for the card-swipe access to the sixth floor. Library West also has study rooms similar to those at the LIC. Five committee members are needed for the Fall 2007 Class Gift campaign. Members help the class raise money for the class gift campaign, have the opportunity to network with alumni and are invited to join the Law Alumni Council (the law school’s volunteer board) upon graduation. Attention Aspiring Lawyers and Nature Lovers The Florida Law Review is pleased to announce that Molly McUsic will visit the Levin College of Law to give a lecture entitled “Cows, Trees, or Condos: Why Neither Markets Nor Regulation Can Protect Enough Land,” at 1 p.m., Friday Sept. 7, in the Bailey Courtroom. McUsic is a noted jurist and law professor who is currently the executive director of the Wyss Foundation, a national organization that develops and promotes strategies for land conservation. Call for Student Recruitment Team Applications The Office of Admissions is seeking students, regardless of year, to help bring the nation’s top undergraduates to the Levin College of Law. Members of the team conduct campus tours, discuss their law school experiences with prospective law students and travel to cities around the state and nationwide for recruitment efforts, participate in panel discussions, and/or speak to UF organizations regarding admissions. As a member of the Student Recruitment Team, students will be trained to answer inquiries from prospective law students. Two hours per week is the minimum time commitment for the program. If you are interested in becoming part of the team, contact Noemar Castro at castro@law.ufl.edu for an application form. The application deadline is Friday, Aug. 31, and applicants must be ready to attend a training session on Thursday, Sept. 6. Military Law Students Association Executive Board Elections Aug. 29 The Military Law Students Association (MLSA) will hold its first general board meeting and executive board elections on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at noon, in Room 284 Holland Hall. Spring Semester Externships Meeting Sept. 4 A meeting to explain the externship program for the 2008 Spring Semester will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Room 285B Holland Hall. Externship application information, including descriptions of available externships, will be distributed at the meeting. All students interested in applying for an externship during the Spring 2008 semester must attend this meeting. Moot Court Announces Intramural Tryout Competition and Informational Meeting The University of Florida’s Justice Campbell Thornal Moot Court announces its Intramural Tryout Competition. One of the foremost national moot court teams, the Moot Court Team competes each year at over a dozen tournaments throughout the country.
Trial Team Intramural Informational Meeting Trial Team tryout informational meetings will be held on Monday, Aug. 27, at 6:30 p.m., and Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 6:30 p.m., in Room 285B Holland Hall. Interested students should attend one of the informational meetings. Members of the team will be in attendance to explain the tryout process and to answer any questions you may have. Tryout packets with the competition problem, rules and dates will be made available upon signing up. All law students in their second year and/or with at least two remaining semesters following the semester in which they participate in the intramural competition are eligible to participate. If you cannot make it to one of the meetings, Trial Team members will be tabling in the courtyard Tuesday, Aug. 28, through Wednesday, Sept. 5. University of Florida law students, faculty and staff, pictured at left, removed trash, debris and exotic invasive plants from a 3.3-acre wooded area across from the Levin College of Law as part of UF Law's annual Community Service Day on Saturday, Aug. 18, which involved more than 400 volunteers at 13 locations throughout the Gainesville area. 
As law students, you have joined a professional group charged with the significant responsibility of providing and ensuring justice to all. This is a responsibility you should always be mindful of throughout law school and your career, no matter the type of law you practice or what kind of organization you serve. There are a variety of ways attorneys can help address the abundance of social issues that affect the indigent, underrepresented, and underserved. 
When she first came to Gainesville to begin classes at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, J. Samantha Vacciana thought she had a pretty clear idea of what she wanted to do. After working in the student affairs office at Florida Atlantic University, she thought earning a law degree would allow her to advance in her present career. Instead, law school became a journey of self-discovery that took her in a direction she never would have imagined.
Welcome back to those returning and a warm welcome to the incoming students. Last year I had the pleasure of working with some of you and meeting students within the law school. For those of you who are new or I have not met, I thought that I would take some time at the beginning of the year to explain the role of a resource counselor and a little bit about the counseling field.
University of Florida law student Scott Holtz, of Plantation, was one of four college students who recently completed the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation's award-winning Everglades ecology internship. Holtz, 23, spent 11 weeks studying the history, hydrology and geology of the Everglades, and improved a wetland area at the South Florida Science Museum. He completed the prestigious program on Aug. 2, before returning to Gainesville to begin his second year at the Levin College of Law. 
The UF law faculty is comprised of highly accomplished scholar-teachers who bring remarkable experience and knowledge to the classroom. Keep up with what they're writing about and saying each week in FlaLaw by reading about their scholarship and activities, as well as their media appearances.
The Environmental and Land Use Law Program offers many opportunities for students to become involved and learn about these important areas of law. At the meeting, students will learn critical information about the ELUL program, including the requirements for earning a Certificate in Environmental and Land Use Law, and details about the curriculum, including the Conservation Clinic, summer externships, Summer Study Abroad in Costa Rica, the Environmental and Land Use Law Society, the Environmental Moot Court Team, and the Public Interest Environmental Conference.

The UF Levin College of Law would not be what it is today without support from alumni all over the state and country. Now it is your chance to make a difference and leave a legacy for future generations of students.
New members are selected each fall from all third semester students who try out for the team. To be eligible, students must have completed appellate advocacy and be in good academic standing. The tryout process consists of writing a brief and performing two oral arguments; briefs are due Wednesday, Sept. 19, and oral arguments commence Wednesday, Sept. 26. The four best competitors in the intramural tryout will argue in front of a panel of prestigious judges at the Final Four Competition to be held Friday, Oct. 12.
