Keeping Up With Career Services' Programming and Resources
The Center for Career Services offers myriad tools and services to aid you in your job search. Becoming familiar with these resources and taking responsibility for the information that is frequently updated is up to you. On Thursday, August 23, the Center for Career Services hosted its Fall Kickoff Program where the entire staff was available to offer a summary of the services and resources open to you. Programs such as the Fall Kickoff Program are designed to help you and to disseminate important information to you in a convenient and timely manner. Because of the large number of students at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, it is simply not possible for us to go over the vast amount of information and resources with each individual student. Please keep up with our information in these four valuable mechanisms of communication—FlaLaw Online, the website, our programs, and our Hotlines—so you don’t miss out.
For a convenient summary of what was covered at the Fall Kickoff Program, please read on:
What Can Career Services Do for Me?
Counseling
Counselors are available for guidance on fulfilling career goals, answering questions about the employment market or providing assistance with career research. To schedule an appointment, stop by CCS, call 273-0860 or email CCS at careers@law.ufl.edu.
The CCS web page
The CCS web page has detailed information about services available, downloadable forms, handouts, and instructions on how to make an appointment to meet with a CCS counselor ( www.law.ufl.edu/career).
Career Service Center (CCS) List-serve Hotline
The CCS Hotline announces programs, internship openings, deadline reminders, and available job opportunities. Make sure to read every email from the CCS Hotline.
Symplicity
Symplicity is a web-based program providing access to UF Law's job bank and the On-Campus Interview program. Watch your email and make sure to sign up for a Symplicity training session.
Resumes and Cover Letters
Before making an appointment for a resume or cover letter review, look at the sample documents on the CCS webpage. We strongly recommend that you have your resume reviewed by a CCS counselor to ensure that your accomplishments are highlighted and that your product is error free. Students may email (careers@law.ufl.edu) or drop off a resume for a 48-hour review.
Mock Interviews
Mock interviews are an excellent opportunity to polish your presentation skills by being interviewed by a volunteer attorney. Following the mock interview, feedback and suggestions for improvement are provided by the interviewers.
Inns of Court
The esteemed American Inns of Court, a legal mentoring organization, teams law students with new lawyers, seasoned practitioners, judges and senior trial lawyers. UF Law is affiliated with Inns in Jacksonville, Gainesville, and Ocala. Selections for the Inns are typically made each fall with the exception of Jacksonville (April).
Pro Bono & Community Service Projects
Both projects provide the opportunity to serve the underserved and underrepresented. The Pro Bono Project focuses on individuals with legal issues and allows students to utilize and hone specific legal skills. The Community Service Project also targets the underserved and underrepresented, but in a non-legal capacity. Upon completion of 35 service hours, students are eligible to receive a certificate of recognition at the Center for Career Services' annual spring celebration.
Seminars and Workshops
Previous seminars and workshops have addressed topics including Drafting Resumes and Cover Letters, Interviewing Strategies, Fellowships, Clerkships & Internships, Job Search Techniques, Building your Legal Credentials and Marketing Yourself, and From Bar Application to Bar Exam. These hands-on workshops give students the tools they need to craft and maximize their individual job search plan.
Resume Collection
Often employers ask CCS to collect resumes from interested students and forward them on for consideration. Details about these positions are available in the Symplicity Job Bank.
Programs
Programs are arranged for students on topics ranging from interviewing skills to what it’s like to practice in a large firm. Previous speakers have included panels by lawyers in prosecutor’s offices, government attorneys, civil litigation attorneys, and public interest attorneys. Topics may include environmental and international work to alternative career opportunities. Feel free to recommend a program topic you would like to see or ask your student group about co-sponsoring a program with the CCS.
Recruitment Programs and Job Fairs
The CCS participates in many annual job fairs across the nation. These events give students access to employers from across the country, who may not visit for on-campus interviews. Student registration deadlines for these job fairs are months in advance of the fair date. Make sure to watch for registration deadlines 6 to 12 months before the date of the actual job fair. Job fairs include:
- Florida Small Firm Job Fair
- Annual Patent Law Interview Program
- Southeastern Minority Job Fair
- CCBA Minority Law Student Job Fair
- Black Prosecutors Job Fair
- Minnesota Minority Recruitment Conference
- Mid-Atlantic Legal Recruiting Conference
- New Hampshire Legal Job Fair
- Southeastern Law Placement Consortium
- Lavender Law Conference & Career Fair
- Hispanic National Bar Association Convention
- Equal Justice Works
1L Shadow Program
The 1L Shadow Program pairs first year students with practicing attorneys during the summer after the first year of law school. Students learn by shadowing attorneys during a typical day and in their environment. Opportunities are often available in many Florida cities, including Gainesville, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Tallahassee and Jacksonville.
Judicial Clerkship Program
Judicial clerkships are an excellent way to gain experience and credibility while clerking for a judge at the local, state, or federal level. The application process for clerkships begins in the spring of your second year. Watch for a training program on how to get started with this process and to learn about the benefits of clerking.
On-campus Interviewing (OCI)
The CCS offers two seasons of on-campus interviewing and an early interview week in August to students seeking employment. Each year, approximately two-hundred employers conduct interviews at the law school seeking summer associates, entry level associates, judicial clerks, and tax associates. Before a student can participate in OCI, they must become familiar with the Symplicity online bidding program. Training is available throughout the year.
Reciprocity
Other law schools may allow visiting alumni and 3L’s to use resources, including job postings, publications and resource files. If you are looking for work in a different geographic area and are interested in utilizing another school’s career resources, complete a Reciprocity Request Form, available in the CCS.
Career Library
The Career Library, housed in CCS, includes dozens of directories, job search guides, titles on legal practice areas & alternative careers, plus special interest books. Most materials can be checked out by students.
