Professor Slobogin to Speak on the Constitution and Government Surveillance Wednesday, Sept. 19

Constitution DayOn September 17, 1787, the 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution of the United States of America. This year marks the 220th anniversary of that event, and as part of the University of Florida's Constitution Day activities, Levin College of Law Professor Chris Slobogin will speak at noon Wednesday, Sept. 19, in the law school's Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom (HOL 180) on "The Constitution and Surveillance by the Government."

Career Spotlight: Joe Jacquot

Joe JacquotJacksonville native Joe Jacquot (JD 99), the deputy attorney general and chief of staff for Florida's Attorney General, is excited to be back home fighting for the people of Florida after years in Washington, D.C. representing U.S. Senators and a Senate committee. Jacquot became interested in law after working for the former U.S. Senator from Florida, Connie Mack, for two years in the nation’s capital after graduating from the University of Virginia. The different kinds of lawyers he worked with initially in Washington motivated him to pursue law school.

Students Welcome to Sept. 28 Kickoff for 'Florida Tomorrow: The Campaign for the University of Florida'

Florida Tommorrow"Florida Tomorrow: The Campaign for the University of Florida" will kickoff Friday, Sept. 28, with events at UF and the Levin College of Law. Students are encouraged to stop by the law school campus for a day of fun and educational activities. There will be numerous faculty presentations, and a barbecue sponsored by the Gene and Elaine Glasser Fund, open to all students, faculty, staff & alumni, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the law school's Marcia Whitney Schott Courtyard. Open Houses and tours will be taking place throughout the day, as well as a Law Student Art Show in the Lawton Chiles Legal Information Center. Atkins and McCarty Posthumously Inducted into UF Law’s Heritage of Leadership

heritageThe Honorable C. Clyde Atkins (J.D. 36), an influential judge and a champion of civil rights, and John Moore McCarty (J.D. 41), a former state senator, judge, Florida Bar president and member of the influential 1968 Constitution Revision Commission, were posthumously inducted into the University of Florida Levin College of Law Heritage of Leadership Recognition Society on Friday, Sept. 7. McCarty's family members are pictured above at the ceremony.

UF Law Faculty's Scholarly Impact Recognized in Newest Leiter Rankings

LeiterLevin College of Law faculty scholarly impact has been recognized as one of the best in the country in the latest rankings from University of Texas Law Professor Brian Leiter. UF Law was ranked among the Top 35 Law Faculties Based on Scholarly Impact for 2007. Rankings were based on standard "objective" measures of scholarly impact, per capita citations to faculty scholarship using Westlaw's JRL database. The 10 most-cited faculty members were Jeffrey Harrison, Berta-Hernandez-Truyol, Jerry Israel, Robert Jerry, Lars Noah, Bill Page, Juan Perea, Leonard Riskin, Christopher Slobogin and Barbara Woodhouse. UF Law Professor Michael Seigel to Testify Before U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary

Patrick leahyUF Law Professor Michael Seigel has accepted an invitation from Sen. Patrick Leahy (pictured left) to testify Tuesday, Sept. 18, before the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, which Leahy chairs. Seigel will testify at a hearing on "Examining Approaches to Corporate Fraud Prosecutions and the Attomey-Client Privilege Under the McNulty Memorandum," scheduled for 10:30 a.m., which may be televised on C-SPAN. Deadline Thursday for Submissions to Law School's Annual Art Show

Art ShowUniversity of Florida Levin College of Law students, staff and faculty are invited and encouraged to submit pieces of their original artwork by Thursday, Sept. 20, for the law school's Annual Art Show. After being reviewed by a selection committee, the artwork will be displayed on the first floor of the Chiles Legal Information Center beginning Friday, Sept. 28.

Florida Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp (JD 87) Speaks at UF Law
Jef KottkampFlorida Lieutenant Governor Jeff Kottkamp, a 1987 UF Law graduate, stopped by the Levin College of Law on Friday, Sept. 7, to meet with faculty memebers and law students. Before becoming an elected official, Kottkamp served as a law clerk for two U.S. District Court Judges in Miami. He then returned home to Southwest Florida to practice law. Kottkamp (pictured left) first ran for public office in 2000, when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. He was subsequently re-elected in 2002 and 2004.

Student Orgs FairStudent Organization Fair Wednesday, Sept. 19, in Law School's Schott Courtyard
The Levin College of Law's Schott Courtyard will be filled with representatives from the law school's dozens of curricular and co-curricular organizations this Wednesday, Sept. 19, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., for the annual Student Organization Fair. The event is held at the beginning of each semester to help students explore opportunities available to them through group activities. Federalist Society Cookout at President's House Friday
The Federalist Society will have its first event of the year on Friday, Sept., 21, at the home of its president, Bobby Long, 4620 NW 28th St. in Gainesville. The event will start at 7 p.m. There will be a cookout with free food. All students and faculty are welcome, and everyone is encouraged to bring a friend whether or not they are in law school.

Briefs are due Wednesday, Sept. 19, for this year's University of Florida Justice Campbell Thornal Moot Court Team Intramural Tryout Competition.

briefs DueOral arguments commence Wednesday, Sept. 26. The four best competitors in the intramural tryout will argue in front of a panel of prestigious judges at the Final Four Competition to be held Friday, Oct. 12. All law students in their second year and joint degree-seeking students with four remaining semesters (including this current semester) are invited to try out. Please note: The Justice Campbell Thornal Moot Court will hold only one intramural tryout competition for the 2007-2008 academic school year.
