UF Law Graduate Tax Program Visits Lima, Peru
Grad TaxThis summer, Professors Michael Friel, Lawrence Lokken, Martin McMahon and Yariv Brauner traveled to Lima, Peru, to speak at a joint UF/IFA Peru sponsored conference. The faculty represented UF Graduate Tax Program's new International Tax degree program in this two-day event, which involved well-respected members of various Peruvian organizations, universities and private companies. Presentations on a wide range of topics of critical importance to tax professionals, structured to provide both breadth of coverage and in-depth understanding of the tax issues involved, were presented at the conference. These topics included U.S. Tax Treaty Policies, U.S. Corporate Taxation issues and Harmful Tax Practices issues. The conference was made possible by a joint partnership between the UF Graduate Tax Program and the IFA Peru organization. Enthusiastic discussions between the director of the Graduate Tax Program and international graduates were the impetus for organizing this event. One panel represented IFA Peru while another was comprised of Latin American graduates of the UF Graduate Tax Program. Each panelist discussed the subjects and brought forward issues inherent in U.S. tax law into agreement with the Latin American reality.

ILS Members Attend Luncheon With Russian Judges
ILSOn Sept. 18, UF Law students had the unique opportunity to gain insight into the Russian legal system. Professor Cohn and the International Law Society hosted a question-and-answer luncheon with five visiting judges from Russia. Students filled the Faculty Dining Room to ask the judges questions that covered many topics, including the differences between common law and civil law systems, Russia's current moratorium on capital punishment, the role of juries in criminal trials and the process one goes through to become a judge in Russia. The talk also included a discussion on the Soviet legacy and Russia's contemporary legal system. Students were given a broad overview of the Russian legal system as some judges recounted their experiences with criminal trials, while others described their experience with civil trials.
