UF urges influenza vaccination to prevent spread of disease

Flu ShotBeginning Oct. 20, students, faculty and staff can go to the Student Healthcare Center and get a flu shot. Getting a flu vaccination will provide ample time to build antibody protection against influenza before the cold and flu season starts.

Students, faculty and staff can get a flu shot from 8:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. or 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. this week. Cost is $5 for students and $25 for faculty and staff.

Student Healthcare Center outreach clinics will be held at the following locations from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.:

Reitz Union: Oct. 21 – Oct. 28, Nov. 5 and Nov. 13-14
Founders Gallery at Shands: Oct. 22, Oct. 30 and Nov. 4
Plaza of the Americas: Oct. 23 and Nov. 6

UF students and staff who fall into the high risk category are encouraged to get their flu shot. High-risk individuals include the following:

  • Persons with chronic illness like asthma, diabetes and hypertension
  • Persons age 50 and older
  • Health care workers and health care students with direct patient contact
  • Pregnant women
  • Household contacts or caregivers of children under six months of age
  • Household contacts or persons caring for a family member with cancer or any disease that causes immunosuppression

Credit card, cash and checks will be accepted at the main SHCC and SHCC at Shands. Students may also defer the $5 charge to their UF account at the main SHCC and SHCC at Shands clinics.
