Faculty Scholarship & Activities
Berta Hernandez
Levin Mabie and Levin Professor; Associate Director, Center on Children and Families
- Presented "Sanctions and Human Rights" at The Cuban Embargo and Human Rights Conference, Oct. 24, at St. Thomas University School of Law.
Robert H. Jerry
Dean; Levin Mabie and Levin Professor
- Jacksonville Financial News & Daily Record, Oct. 20, 2008
Jerry was a guest speaker at the Jacksonville Bar Association’s monthly luncheon where he expressed concern about the choices law students may have to make due to finances. “Students are graduating with so much debt that it’s tough for them to think about serving with the State Attorney’s or Public Defender’s Office after they graduate,” said Jerry. “That’s a decision they shouldn’t have to make if they want to serve the public.”
Jon Mills
Professor; Director of Center for Governmental Responsibility; Dean Emeritus
- Gainesville Sun, Editorial Page, Oct. 21, 2008
Mills penned an editorial endorsing Barack Obama saying, “Good politics is not necessarily a predictor of good statesmanship. That concept is not difficult to sell. So, since we generally agree that we want leaders who are statesmen, how do we make the decision to select a new president other than by watching thirty second commercials?
We seek someone with sound judgment, an understanding of American values, and the ability to deal with the unexpected.”
Juan Perea
Cone Wagner Nugent Johnson, Hazouri and Roth Professor
- WRUF AM 850, Oct. 20, 2008
Perea was interviewed on Amendment 1 and said, “This is an old amendment that should be done away with.” The amendment was enacted early in the 20th century and Perea says it was done for the wrong reasons. “Even though this amendment wasn't strictly enforced, its rare that voters can take away something like this. This is a chance to take an embarrassing amendment off the books forever.”
