UF Law Faculty in the News

Russell-BrownKatheryn Russell-Brown
Professor; Director of Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations

  • The Gainesville Sun and The Ledger, Oct. 22. Quoted in an article discussing the racial bigotry throughout the United States in recent months. She said the frequency of these recent noose hanging incidents suggests there's still a subsection of American society that harbors a long-standing hatred of minorities. "It's a small number (of incidents)," said Russell-Brown, who is writing a book about lynching. "But these things represent much larger constituencies, and that's what the concern is." She proceeds to discuss how the college campus is a place for these happenings to arise. "You're confronted with people who are different, professors who are different, professors who look different than you and issues you're not used to talking about," she said. "No surprise that tensions would come to the surface there." Russell-Brown stated the recent attention this issue is getting is "healthy."
