Florida Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp (JD 87) to Speak at Fall 2007 Commencement Ceremony
Florida Lieutenant Governor Jeff Kottkamp, a 1987 UF Law graduate, will address Fall 2007 graduates at the University of Florida Levin College of Law's commencement at 2 p.m. Dec. 21 at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Before becoming an elected official, Kottkamp served as a law clerk for two U.S. District Court Judges in Miami. He then returned home to Southwest Florida to practice law. Kottkamp first ran for public office in 2000, when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. He was subsequently re-elected in 2002 and 2004. One of the most important pieces of legislation that Kottkamp sponsored during his service in the legislature was the Marvin Davies Civil Rights Act of 2003.The bill provided the Attorney General’s office with the authority to take action when a “pattern or practice” of discrimination has occurred. He also sponsored numerous pieces of legislation to reduce taxes, including the repeal of the Intangibles Tax, and served as Co-Chair of the Taxpayer Protection Caucus. Students and faculty are asked to arrive at 1:15 p.m. The ceremony will last approximately 90 minutes to two hours. There will be a reception to follow at the Levin College of Law Marcia Schott Courtyard. Parking will be in the lot directly in front of the Phillips Center for Performing Arts as well as the parking garage in the same complex.

Career Spotlight: Elizabeth Hernandez
UF Law alumna Elizabeth Hernandez (JD
83) is now leading one of the largest minority bar organizations in the United States, the Cuban American Bar Association (CABA). The organization includes judges, lawyers and law students of Cuban and Cuban-American
descent, as well as those interested in issues affecting the Cuban community. "We are the advocates who ensure equal access and opportunity to all," said Hernandez. "It is exhilarating."
During her presidency, Hernandez hopes to "expand on the basic premise that motivates the organization, which is to complete diversity in all of its firms, not just at the bottom, but at the
board level as well."

Informational Meetings for ABA-Approved Summer Programs in France, South Africa and Costa Rica
The University of Florida Levin College of Law jointly sponsors summer law programs with the University of Costa Rica; the University of Montpellier, France; and the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Financial Intelligence Adviser Alan Lambert Discusses Money Laundering in the Caribbean
Alan Lambert (pictured left), a former career detective who specializes in the investigation of financial crimes
in the Caribbean, spoke to UF law students Oct. 31 at an event sponsored by CaribLaw, the International Law Society, and the Black Law Students Association. For the past seven years, at the appointment of
the United Kingdom Foreign Office, Lambert served as a financial
intelligence adviser to the governments of Trinidad & Tobago,
Antigua & Barbuda, and St. Kitts and Nevis. Lambert created
financial investigation and financial intelligence units and conducted training courses for select personnel as a consultant to
the Caribbean Anti-Money Laundering Programme.
Lambert worked for at least 30 years as a detective in the
United Kingdom police force, specializing in white collar crime
and the financial affairs of drug traffickers. At one point, he
served as Head of the Financial Investigation Unit for
Hertfordshire Police. Currently, Lambert operates his own
consulting business, Askalan.

Bill Nye 'The Science Guy' to Speak at UF Nov. 6
Television personality Bill Nye "The Science Guy" will speak on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Florida. The show begins at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7:15 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Nye is currently the host of two television series, "The 100 Greatest Discoveries" on the Science Channel and "The Eyes of Nye" on PBS. Nye is most famously known for hosting the popular educational program, "Bill Nye the Science Guy." The show ran from 1993-1997 and won 28 Emmy Awards. Nye also authored five books and won seven Emmy Awards for writing, performing and producing.

Ankersen Named Faculty Fellow in Sustainability, Slobogin Talks to Media About Death Penalty Moratorium
The Office of the Provost announced that Conservation Clinic Director Tom Ankersen (pictured, left) will be the Faculty Fellow in Sustainability beginning in the Spring 2008 semester. In other news, a televised American Bar Association panel, on which UF Law Professor Chris Slobogin participated, discussed why the nation's death penalty system "falls short" in providing defendants with "fair and accurate" treatment. Slobogin, who chaired the team that assessed Florida’s system, told the Miami Herald that a "significant majority" of the group voted for a moratorium. The panel’s presentation appeared on C-Span, and excerpts appeared in other media outlets. Brazilian Federal Prosecutor Presents Talk on Criminal Justice and Drug Addiction Nov. 6
The Law & Policy in the Americas Program is pleased to announce Robertson Azevedo (pictured left), guest lecturer from Curitiba, Brazil, will give a presentation at 2 p.m. Nov. 6, in Grinter Hall Room 376, in the Center for Latin American Studies (third floor). The subject of Azevedo's talk will be criminal justice and drug addiction treatment in Brazil, with an analysis of Brazil's cutting-edge new controlled substance laws. 'When Free Speech & Tasers Meet' Panel Discussion Nov. 6 at UF
UF Levin College of Law Professor Lyrissa Lidsky (pictured left) is among the speakers who will participate in a panel discussion, "When Free Speech & Tasers Meet", at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the Computer Science & Engineering Building (CSE), Room A101, on the UF campus. The American Constitution Society, the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, Amnesty International, and Students for a Democratic Society are co-sponsoring the panel discussion about the use of Tasers, police practices, freedom of speech, and the rights and safety of students. Other participants in the panel include University of South Florida Criminology Professor Lorie Fridell, Central Florida attorney Thomas B. Luka, and First Amendment attorney Gary S. Edinger. Federalist Society Presents Talk on Constitutionality of Campaign Finance Laws
The Federalist Society presents a talk by Todd F.
Gaziano of the Heritage Foundation on "Why Most Campaign Finance Laws
are Patently Unconstitutional" at noon Wednesday, Nov. 7, in Holland Hall Room 360. His talk will explain the
Constitutional aspects of Campaign Finance and ask the question,
"Was it phony judicial restraint that prevented the Supreme Court
from striking down more of McCain-Feingold?" Gaziano is an
expert in the areas of Constitutional Law and Election Law and has served in all three branches of government, working as
a law clerk in the 5th Circuit, as Chief Counsel to a U.S. House
Committee, and at the Justice Department in the Office of Legal
Counsel where he provided advice on Constitutional and other legal
issue to the President of the United States. Along with his
expertise, Gaziano brings a lighthearted and entertaining
presentation to this important issue. Food will be provided.
Law Association for Women Silent Auction Nov. 6-8
The Law Association for Women is having its annual silent auction November 6-8. Last year, law student bids raised over $5,000 to benefit Peaceful Paths. This year the auction will benefit the Alachua County Victim

College Cost Reduction and Access Act Focus of Nov. 7 Brown Bag Lunch Presentation
Interested in Public Interest Law? Not sure how you can do public interest work while trying to pay off your high debt? The Florida Bar Foundation Public Interest Fellows & APIL present a brown bag lunch presentation on The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 at noon Wednesday, Nov. 7, in the Rare Book Room. The Act addresses the problem of high educational debt and low paying public interest careers. We will have roundtable discussion with public interest attorneys that will help describe how the new law reduces monthly student loan payments and provides for loan forgiveness after 10 years of public service employment.
Honor Committee Welcomes New Representatives
The UF Levin College of Law Law Honor Committee congratulates the new representatives who were the winners in elections held Oct. 18. Representing the Class of 2009 are Michael Bradenham, Marsha Dixon, Rebeca Feldman, Aaron Prom, and Lindsay Saxe. Representing the Class of 2010 are Jonathan Ophardt, Jon Philipson, Erin Swick, Melissa Wolfe, and Kevin Sharbaugh.
The Honor Committee administers the Honor Code. In this capacity, the Honor Committee has the authority to do all actions which are necessary for the proper administration of the Code. It is composed of law students, two faculty advisors, the Levin College of Law associate dean for students, and a representative of the University of Florida Office of Student Judicial Affairs.
