Schneider educates students on benefits of collaborative divorces
From litigating divorces to fighting child custody battles, family law attorneys who handle dissolutions of marriage are arguably held in public opinion as some of the most adversarial and disfavored lawyers in the legal field. An alternative to traditional courtroom fights to the death, however, seeks to change that. Pamela Schneider (JD 79), adjunct professor and longtime divorce attorney, visited the Levin College of Law on Nov. 14 to educate students on the benefits of collaborative divorces as opposed to the familiar adversarial system.

Examination preparation: What to do before your exams
The end of the semester is quickly approaching along with the beginning of the busy holiday season. Therefore, it is important to manage your time wisely and have a plan in place in order to prepare sufficiently for your upcoming examination period. Anatomy of a Gerrymander
To many Floridians, tasking elected representatives to draw nonpartisan voting districts seems a lot like tasking the fox to guard the henhouse…every 10 years feathers fly. “Reapportionment, or how we divide our districts for the Legislature and Congress, is one of the most important things we do because it determines who you can vote for in your district,” said Jon Mills, UF professor of law, dean emeritus and director of the Levin College of Law Center for Governmental Responsibility.

Klein presents keynote address at Northeast Florida Environmental Summit
Professor Christine Klein presented the keynote address "Beyond Water Wars" at the 2008 Northeast Florida Environmental Summit "Water Wars: Use, Conflict, and the Future" on Nov. 6. The event at Jacksonville University provided scientific, legal and policy perspectives on “water wars” arising in international, national and regional settings and panelists discussed water use conflicts, effectively handling water shortages, and the water crises in Florida.

Modern day slavery: The plight of farm workers in Florida Nov. 19
The Public Service Fellows of the Center for Government Responsibility, sponsored by The Florida Bar Foundation, will present a discussion about the modern-day issues affecting farm workers in Florida. Speakers will include lawyers from Legal Services of North Florida, as well as members of the Student Farmworkers Alliance, and others. This event will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 5 p.m. in 382 HOL.

The Federalist Society invites you to attend "The Discriminating Mind: A Discussion of Unconscious Bias Based on Race and Gender" with Professor Amy Wax, Robert Mundheim Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania law school, on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at noon in 359 HOL. A Q&A session will follow and the event is open to the public.
Healthcare Law Society presents Charles Dorminy Nov. 20
The Healthcare Law Society presents Charles S. Dorminy Nov. 20, in the Bailey Courtroom from 5 – 6 p.m. Dorminy is a partner at Hall, Booth, Smith & Slover, P.C. in Atlanta and will speak generally about healthcare law and offer advice on how to plan a career in the field. He has an LL.M. in healthcare law from the University of Houston and will speak on the advantages of this degree. The event is open to the public.

Get a flu shot on the law school campus Nov. 20
On Nov. 20, the Student Health Care Center will be at the law school to administer flu shots to faculty, staff and students. They will be at the law school from 2:15 - 4 p.m. in the faculty dining room. The cost is five dollars for students and $25 for faculty and staff.

Study abroad in Cape Town, South Africa
The UF Law summer program in South Africa 2009 informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. in 360 HOL. Students in the South Africa study abroad program at the University of Cape Town benefit from a dual focus on comparative and international law. American and South African professors will draw upon their experiences in their respective systems to highlight the similarities and differences in the administration of justice in the United States and South Africa. Students will gain a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each system and of the difficulty of achieving meaningful reform in either country. In addition, the program analyzes how race and race relations impact U.S. and South African legal systems. This five-week program, from June 16 - July 18, 2009, allows you to live in and enjoy a rich culture, while studying law amidst the historic legal, political and social changes occurring in South Africa.
Deadline for applications is March 16, 2009, on a first come, first served basis. CSRRR Summer 2009 Yegelwel Fellowship
The UF Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations (CSRRR) is sponsoring the 2009 Yegelwel Fellowship. For students who are interested in issues of anti-Semitism and bigotry, the fellowship provides a wonderful opportunity to work at the Anti-Defamation League in Florida. The 8-10 week fellowship is for Summer 2009 and comes with a $4,000 stipend. Students who have completed their first year and constitutional law courses (by the time of the fellowship) and are in good academic standing, are eligible to apply.
