UF Law grad joins global sports powerhouse ESPN as business reporter

Kristi Dosh
"Hold on," she said. "This earring is killing me." For a newly minted ESPN reporter, a killer earring isn't an oft-cited hold up. But Kristi Dosh (JD 07), ESPN's newest sports business reporter and a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan, certainly knows how to throw a mean curveball at any preconceived mold. Dosh sets a high bar with her ability to simplify and explain the intricacies involved in the messy intersection of sports and business in topics ranging from the National Basketball Association's recent lockout, to the financial impacts of Missouri's migration to the Southeastern Conference, to the national economic love affair with former Gators quarterback Tim Tebow.

JLPP, CSRRR host 'Race Talk in the Age of Obama' Feb. 8
The UF Journal of Law and Public Policy (JLPP) and the Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations (CSRRR) will host a panel discussion Wednesday, Feb. 8, from noon - 2 p.m. in the Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom, HOL 180. A reception will follow. The event, "Race Talk in the Age of Obama," will be a timely and provocative panel discussion by contributors to the December 2011 issue of the University of Florida Journal of Law and Public Policy. Representing diverse race, gender and academic perspectives, panelists will discuss how they confront race at a time when many claim America is now a post-racial society. In light of the historic election of President Barack Obama, how does race matter? How should we engage in everyday conversations about race at work, at school and informally? What are the potential risks and benefits? What are the consequences of not talking about race? What is "critical citizenship" and how does it impact public policy and our work as students, lawyers and educators? Panelists will include: Professor Jonathan R. Cohen, professor of law, University of Florida; Michelle D. Deardorff, professor of political science, Jackson State University, Jackson, Miss.; Angela Mae Kupenda, professor of law, Mississippi College School of Law, Jackson, Miss.; Professor Kenneth B. Nunn, professor of law, University of Florida; and Professor Sharon E. Rush, Irving Cypen Professor of Law, University of Florida. Contact Melissa Bamba with questions at 273-0614 or bamba@law.ufl.edu.

CCD launches feedback lunch series
The Center for Career Development is kicking off a series of "Feedback Lunches" where students can discuss their ideas, raise questions and provide input on various topics relating to career development. These monthly lunches will each have a theme, and students are encouraged to talk to their classmates and gather additional ideas in order to provide a range of thoughts on each topic. The first lunch will be held at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 24, and the theme will be "Counseling in the CCD." We would love student feedback on how we are performing our counseling duties. Attendance will be limited to the first 12 people to respond; a room will be reserved and the location will be sent out closer to the day of the event. We are also requesting that one of the respondents volunteer to act as the moderator of the discussion. To RSVP, please email careers@law.ufl.edu. Please note that the lunch is brown bag.

Interest meeting today for South Africa 2012 study abroad program
An interest meeting for the summer program in South Africa will be held today at noon in HOL 285D. Students in the South Africa study abroad program at the University of Cape Town benefit from a dual focus on comparative and international law. American and South African professors will draw upon their experiences in their respective systems to highlight the similarities and differences in the administration of justice in the United States and South Africa. Students will gain a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each system and of the difficulty of achieving meaningful reform in either country. This four-week program, from June 11 - July 6, 2012, allows you to live in and enjoy a rich culture, while studying law amidst the historic legal, political and social changes occurring in South Africa. This six-credit program includes Comparative Constitutional Law (Professor Rush), Introduction to South African Law (UCT Professor Paleker), and Comparative Alternative Dispute Resolution (Dean Inman). Enrollment is limited to 27 U.S. students. In addition, a number of students from the University of Cape Town enroll in Comparative Constitutional Law. Deadline for applications is March 23, 2012; you may apply now through the program website. Questions may be directed to the program's directors, Dean Inman and Professor Rush and Director of Student Programs Michelle Ocepek, at ocepek@law.ufl.edu or 273-0620.

Interest meeting for France study abroad Thursday
Earn six credits while spending five weeks in Paris and Montpellier, France. The program takes place June 25 - July 27, and is offered to 1Ls and 2Ls. To learn more, attend the interest meeting on Thursday at 11 a.m. in HOL 285D. Alexis Leventhal (2L) attended last year: "Summer study in France was more than an opportunity to earn credit in a beautiful and culturally rich environment, it was an unforgettable life experience. Taking advantage of this amazing and unique study abroad program was the best decision for my 1L summer. It provided enough time to work in the United States before the program started, it offered challenging and relevant course work, and afforded time to travel and enjoy the beautiful landscape and rich culture of Southern France." Professors Stuart Cohn and Lyrissa Lidsky will serve as program instructors.

Costa Rica program to begin reviewing applications, final information meeting Jan. 25
The UF Law Costa Rica study abroad program will be a shortened, field intensive and interdisciplinary collaboration in 2012. In addition to core international and comparative environmental law courses, law students will work with Ph.D. students and faculty from the UF Water Institute in a skills-based practicum setting designed to address basin-scale tropical water management in the face of anthropogenic change. The results of the work performed by students will inform a multi-university initiative to create a field laboratory for the study of climate change and water management in Central America. Externships and other unique opportunities may also be available for students fluent in Spanish. Due to its collaborative nature, the program will be accepting fewer law students in 2012. There will be a final information meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at noon in HOL 285D. Program Director Tom Ankersen, Director of Student Programs Michelle Ocepek, and students from the 2011 program will be on hand to answer your questions. The program will begin reviewing applications and accepting students immediately thereafter. Accepted students will be expected to attend one or two spring semester webinars that relate to the program practicum. Additional pre-departure readings and organizational meetings may also be required. Interested students are encouraged to visit the program website and contact the program faculty (ankersen@law.ufl.edu or hamann@law.ufl.edu) for more information.
