To encourage and enhance teaching, research and service in the legal field of dispute resolution.
- Teaching
The Institute will encourage, develop and improve teaching of dispute resolution in a wide variety of contexts. This includes general skills courses in negotiation and mediation, as well as subject-specific courses such as Collective Bargaining and Arbitration, International Litigation and Arbitration and the Advanced Course in Labor Arbitration. The Institute will facilitate development of instructional units to introduce dispute resolution theories and simulations into first-year and upper division courses, and also will seek dispute resolution internship opportunities.
- Research
The Institute will be an interdisciplinary research entity addressing policy, ethical, implementation and empirical questions. It will provide a vehicle for experts in dispute resolution at the University of Florida to share information and will collaborate with other centers in our law school and across the state, nation and world.
- Service
The Institute will engage in public policy initiatives, continuing education and training programs, systems design, and conflict resolution. Service activities will be broad-based in terms of both clientele and subject matter. Public policy initiatives will include, but not be limited to, courts, international issues, neighborhood / environmental / agriculture / labor and employment, business disputes, race relations, schools / peer mediation, criminal justice, appellate mediation and the like. Systems design will involve designing dispute resolution systems for governmental bodies and private organizations to help them identify potential disputes in advance and have in place collaborative and problem-solving processes.
