Librarian Research Policy
We can assist Faculty research
by answering quick reference questions. We can also
support your projects and other information requirements
by instructing your research assistant for more time
consuming research needs. We understand that you may
not be aware of which questions are “quickies”
and which ones will involve extensive research. Please
understand that if we determine that the answer is
locatable, but needs extensive search time, we may
ask to instruct your research assistant to help you
pursue the needed response.
A “quick” question may be exemplified
by:
1) What is the enactment date of Laws of Florida 95-293?
2) What does “Car. & Kir.” stand for?
3) What is the address of the U.S consulate in Norway?
4) Someone named Jones wrote part of book on bankruptcy - what book is it?
5) Where can I get a brief for a Florida Supreme Court case from this past year?
6) What countries do not have an extradition treaty with the U.S.?
“Time consuming research needs” may be exemplified by:
1) I need the cases from the past five years supporting the dissent from a specific Supreme Court opinion. 2) I need an annotated bibliography of recent developments in an area of law tangential to my area of expertise.
3) I need five sources that support a theory I’m developing.
4) What treaties relating to atomic energy has the U.S. not signed?

Each member of the professional library staff is assigned to approximately ten to twelve law professors for the purpose of assisting those faculty members in researching the library collection, providing reference service, ordering new book materials under the faculty enrichment program, performing computer searches and other library tasks. The Faculty Library Retrieval Policy makes it easy for College of Law Faculty members to obtain library materials from the University of Florida Library System. From books in our own collection (Law Library, Smathers and others,) to items that must be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan, you can request them in one simple process.
When you send your requested citations via email through our web page (submit a library request), or directly to Terry Rogers (rogers@law.ufl.edu), the Law Library will find, check out and deliver the item to your door or mailbox at the Levin College of Law.
Frequently Asked Questions about the service:
Who may use the Faculty Library Retrieval Service?
All regular or visiting law faculty, law deans and College of Law administrators who have a UF ID. Secretaries are also permitted to make a request on your behalf.
How will I know that my request has been received?
A library staff member will respond to your request as soon as possible by email. If there are any known delays, we will contact you.
When will I receive the requested materials?
Deliveries will be made to faculty offices or mailboxes by 4:00 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Unless an item is currently borrowed by another patron, the turnaround from the time of request to delivery will generally be 24 to 48 hours. This service is not available on weekends or holidays.
When materials must be obtained through the Interlibrary Loan system, the delivery date will depend upon how quickly the lending library sends the materials. For information about ILL requests, contact Ron Perry at 352 273-0714 or Email: perry@law.ufl.edu.
Can the library accommodate requests for long lists of materials?
Yes, but a long request list my take longer than the usual time to deliver all of the items, especially if some items must be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan or from other UF branch libraries.
What happens if the materials I want aren’t available on campus?
We will notify you that we are forwarding your request to the Interlibrary Loan Manager, Ron Perry, who will promptly process your request.
How do I return materials obtained through this service?
You may return all UF Library system materials to the Law Library Circulation Desk. If the materials are borrowed through Interlibrary Loan, you must return them directly to Ron Perry at the Circulation Desk. To help us maintain our borrowing privileges with other libraries, please be sure to comply with all due dates and recall notices. Be aware that we are unable to waive fines from other libraries, including campus libraries, or to alter due dates.
Can this service supply copies for my course pack?
No. We do not have enough staff to meet classroom needs or other customized copying. However, the Reference Staff will be happy to assist in locating materials needed for course packets.
Can my research assistant use the service?
No, but the Reference Staff can help your RA with strategies for identifying and locating relevant materials.
