STUDY OF
LAWYER’S ASP USE COMMISSIONED
Legal Technology Institute
University of Florida
Fredric G. Levin College of Law
(New York, NY, January 24, 2000) — iManage, Inc. (NASDAQ:IMAN), a leading provider of information and collaboration management software has joined with the Legal Technology Institute at the University of Florida Fredric G. Levin College of Law to produce the first study of lawyers’ future use of Application Service Providers (ASPs). “The ASP Survey” involves surveying tens of thousands of legal professionals throughout the country to determine the trends and issues involved in renting software applications and outsourcing Information Technology services via the Internet.
The study will also examine the trends of technological use among the legal community, including current and future access to the Internet. For example, the study will examine whether law firm decision makers are concerned about the total cost of ownership of technology on a per user basis. According to Andrew Z. Adkins III, Director of the Legal Technology Institute and Project Director of the ASP Survey, “The trend in the legal industry is to upgrade technology every three to five years. At a cost range from $4,500 to $8,500 per user every three years, law firms are anxious to find a less expensive method for keeping up with technological advancements. The ASP Survey is aimed at answering that and similar questions.”
“iManage is pleased to undertake this important study with the Legal Technology Institute,” said Rick Klau, Director of Industry Marketing, Legal Markets. “Each day, more legal professionals embrace technology, and are looking for ways to increase return on their investment. The ASP model is geared toward small firms as well as large firms and iManage is committed to helping shape this market.”
Joining LTI and iManage are casecentral.com, eAttorney, ELF/Serengeti, elite.com, Gavel & Gown, Microsoft, Niku for Legal, realLegal.com, Union Square Technology Group, and West Group. This unique Study model provides the survey sponsors the opportunity to shape the study and to take advantage of the marketing opportunities available for such a large scale survey.
The ASP Survey will combine direct mail and online sampling with standard telephone and fax sampling techniques with true random selections of legal professionals, providing an objective overview of the nation’s lawyers. Additional sponsors of the ASP Survey also contribute to the survey questionnaire by asking their own questions. Results of the study, which will be conducted during the Spring and Summer of 2000 will be released in the fourth quarter of 2000.
“The resources and techniques employed by the Legal Technology Institute are refined and experienced in this survey model,” says Jon L. Mills, Interim Dean of the University of Florida law school. “We are once again pleased to provide a vehicle for such an important direction for technology in the legal profession.”
