Section 1.6 - Benefits of Electronic Public Access

Availability
Electronic Public Access allows the public access any time, day or night or weekends. Because so many matters can be handled outside the court and outside normal business hours, those who must visit the courthouse are served more promptly and, at their convenience. On-line access to court information allows people to get the information they need without having to come to the courthouse and take time off from work.

Increased court operating efficiency
A court staff person that spends less time on routine, repetitive activities is more productive. When electronic public access is provided by the court, clerks have more time to deal with complex questions and problems inside the court.

Improved & enhanced customer service
Basic information, given quickly and consistently, is directed to the exact needs of the user in a manner that does not discern ethnicity, gender or age. Instead of listening to information repeated over the phone, people can save on-line information on their own computer or print out a copy. In large counties with several courthouses, the public would have to travel to each of the county’s courthouses to manually search court files to obtain the same information electronically. When records are hard copy, only one user can access a file at any given time; electronic public access provides a copy to all requestors — at their convenience.

Decreased costs
Online court information can be accessed repeatedly without the court incurring additional costs. Mailing a hundred copies of the same document costs about a hundred times as much as mailing one copy – and on-line documents can be accessed hundreds, or even thousands of times without incurring additional costs. Routine matters can be completed without the intervention of attorneys, saving the public additional time and money.

Reduced court congestion and wear
Electronic Public Access reduces the cost and time spent by court personnel in dealing with the public. An automated process for distributing information allows court employees to do other work. Simple questions can be answered automatically.  Reducing the need for physical visits to the courthouse also helps to reduce courthouse traffic and parking and its attendant costs.
