UF Law Gators lead The Florida Bar
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Gator Nation continues to lead the officer ranks at The Florida Bar, with University of Florida Levin College of Law alumni serving as immediate past-president, president and president-elect for 2011-2012.
Current President Mayanne A. Downs (UF Law JD 87) will become past president, Scott G. Hawkins (UF Law JD 83) will take over as president, and Gwynne A. Young (UF Law JD 74) will become president-elect at the 2011 annual Florida Bar Convention’s General Assembly on Friday, June 24, at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando.
“We are very proud to have another UF Law graduate lead The Florida Bar,” said UF Law Dean Robert Jerry. “I am certain Scott will do an excellent job as the 2011 president, following in the footsteps of Mayanne Downs in 2010 and Jay White in 2008.”
Hawkins will be the third UF alum to serve as Florida Bar president in the last four years. He is the vice-chair and a shareholder at Jones, Foster, Johnston & Stubbs, P.A. in West Palm Beach, where he practices commercial litigation. Hawkins serves on the UF Law Center Association Board of Trustees, where he was assistant secretary for the past two years, and has chaired the Heritage of Leadership Committee.
Downs is a shareholder at King, Blackwell, Downs & Zehnder, P.A. in Orlando and specializes in civil and trial practice. She has served as city attorney since 2007.
Young is a shareholder at Carlton Fields in Tampa where she practices business litigation, dealing with commercial and business disputes. She is an emeritus member of the UF Law Center Association Board of Trustees and currently serves on its Campaign Committee.
John “Jay” G. White III (UF Law JD 83) served as president of The Florida Bar for 2008-2009. He is a shareholder at Richman Greer Professional Assocation in West Palm Beach.
UF Law will also host a reception at the convention open to all UF Law alumni to provide its graduates with the opportunity to network and reconnect with friends and colleagues from all around the state. The deadline for UF Law alumni to RSVP for the reception is June 16.
