GAINESVILLE, Fla – Eastside High School freshmen will learn about the law Friday from professors and students from the University of Florida Levin College of Law during the UF Law Center on Children and Families’ seventh annual Youth Summit.

The summit starts at 12:30 p.m. at Eastside High in Gainesville. UF Law professors and students will educate about 250 Eastside freshmen on juvenile justice and their legal rights and responsibilities as Florida residents.

The Youth Summit is designed to engage high school students in discussions about matters concerning law and policy and how each affects them.

The students were given the option to submit a two-page essay addressing the question: “What do you aspire to become and what steps do you intend to take to help you achieve your goals?” Two winners will be announced Friday and each will receive a computer provided by NFL player Sinorice Moss’s Dare to Dream Foundation. There were 25 essay entries. All of the entrants receive gift cards sponsored by the Mu Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Each student at the summit will receive a copy of “Your Future, Your Choice: A guide to what every teen should know about the law,” published by the Center on Children and Families. The publication is available in PDF format.

The mission of the UF Law Center on Children and Families is to promote the highest quality of advocacy, teaching and scholarship in the areas of child and family law and policy.
