UF Law Oil Spill Response

UF Law Oil Spill Response

On April 20, 2010, an offshore oil drilling platform, Deepwater Horizon, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico near Louisiana. Since June, a group of faculty from the University of Florida Levin College of Law have been meeting to develop a research agenda regarding legal and policy questions related to the subsequent oil spill.

The UF Law Working Group is reviewing the current status of law and policy that will be needed to respond to the oil spill. The legal and policy issues will include assessments of admiralty law, federal environmental laws, and state laws and policies.

Jon Mills, dean emeritus, professor of law, and director of the Center for Governmental Responsibility, is chairing the law school’s working group. Mills also serves on the University of Florida’s Oil Spill Task Force, where he is chairing the Focus Group on Legal and Policy Issues.
