Summer in South Africa
Summer Law Program in Cape Town, South Africa
June 16-July 18, 2009
Open to all Graduate and Law Students
Increasingly, United States and international legal employers are looking for individuals with an understanding of today’s complex legal environment. As South Africa emerges as a leading political and economic force, opportunities for business, trade and cultural exchanges increase significantly within the region.
Recognizing the importance of providing students with an education that transcends national boundaries, the University of Florida Levin College of Law jointly sponsors the only American summer program approved by the American Bar Association with the University of Cape Town faculty of law in South Africa’s most beautiful, cosmopolitan and diverse city.
Students studying in Cape Town benefit from a dual focus on comparative and international law. We examine United States and South African legal systems on a comparative basis with American and South African professors. Students view South Africa's Civil Law system, compare its constitution to ours and supplement study of South African cultural heritage with visits to Robben Island and other sites significant in the anti-apartheid struggle. The Florida/Cape Town program allows students to live in and enjoy a rich culture, while studying law amidst the historic legal, political and social changes occurring in South Africa. As part of the program requirements, students will also visit Parliament, courts, schools, and national heritage sites.
