Prospective Member Information
The Florida Journal of International Law is a co-curricular activity that allows all students to earn up to three academic credits, and allows students enrolled in the International and Comparative Certificate program to earn credits toward meeting their certificate program’s requirements. Joining FJIL offers students numerous benefits, including:
- The opportunity to enhance researching and writing skills
- A stronger resume (most competitive employers consider journal membership a prerequisite for consideration)
- Two opportunities to compete for publication in the journal
- Access to an extensive outline bank
- Networking opportunities with FJIL alumni
- Increased exposure to international legal issues
- Journal camaraderie and social outings
Students may join FJIL either by grading-on or writing-on.
Grading-on
At the beginning of each Fall semester, FJIL invites the students from the top ten percent of the previous 1L class (based only on grades from the previous Fall and Spring semesters) to join FJIL.
Writing-on
At the beginning of each Fall semester (and from time to time at the beginning of Spring semester), FJIL will conduct a Write-On Competition, open to all 2L students who have satisfactorily completed Legal Research & Writing and have a grade point average above 2.0. The FJIL Student Works Editors will invite the authors of the best submissions to join FJIL.

Membership Requirements
Journal members are required to write a Comment during their first semester on the journal (members who join the Journal through the Write-On Competition will automatically meet this requirement per their write-on submission). Each Fall the Student Works Editor, in conjunction with the Editor-In-Chief picks the Best Comment from that semester for publication in the Journal.
Journal members are required to write a Note during their second semester on the Journal (though members are allowed to defer this to a later semester if they wish). Each semester, the Notes Editor, in conjunction with the Editor-In-Chief, picks the Best Note from that semester for publication in the Journal.
Journal members are also required to assist in editing and preparing articles for publication – including proofreading text, checking footnotes for proper format, and locating cited sources and confirming accuracy of cited material.
