Weyrauch Lecture Series
Stephanie Coontz, professor, Evergreen State College and director of research and education of the Council on Contemporary Families, deliverED the second annual Weyrauch Distinguished Lecture in Family Law on March 26, in the Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom (180 Holland Hall). Coontz, a social historian who is nationally known for her work on the history of marriage, has been deeply involved in the litigation and public debate over same-sex marriage. She is perhaps best known for her book, The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap. She most recently published Marriage, A History: From Obedience to Intimacy, or How Love Conquered Marriage. The title of her lecture is "Courting Disaster: The Historical Revolution in Marriage." Presented by the Center on Children and Families, the lecture is named in honor of Professor Walter O. Weyrauch, internationally known for his work in foreign and family law. Weyrauch came to the United States from Germany in 1952 and joined the UF law faculty in 1957 as an associate professor of law. Today, he is a distinguished professor of law and Stephen C. O’Connell Chair at the law school. A reception will immediately follow the lecture in the Faculty Dining Room.
