For four centuries, Leiden University has been a respected and internationally-oriented university of the highest standing. This is evident in its vast network of scientific contacts and partnerships with other institutions throughout Europe, the Arab world, the United States and Japan. Its university libraries contain three million books and periodicals, including a unique collection of old manuscripts and maps. Leiden offers 54 disciplines and is comprised of the following eight faculties: theology, law, medicine, sciences, arts, social sciences, philosophy and prehistory.

The UF – Leiden Exchange Program is ABA approved and exclusively for UF Law students. Note that only credits will be transferred to a student’s record, not the grades themselves.

The law school is accessible for individuals with disabilities with wheelchair access at the entrance via ramps and to the classrooms and library via elevators/stair lifts/self opening doors. Also, The Netherlands has laws requiring public buildings to be handicap accessible.

    Area Profile

The language of the Netherlands is Dutch, which is also the language spoken at the university. However, now a considerable number of courses (also open to Dutch students) are taught in English. Although English is spoken widely, time spent in Leiden naturally becomes far more interesting if visiting students can speak, understand and read Dutch. There are a number of courses of varying length and intensity to help visiting students master the language.

The city of Leiden, located in the center of the economic and cultural heart of the Netherlands, displays a blend of old and modern architecture.  Leiden, with the oldest and largest university in the Netherlands, made a large contribution to Holland’s Golden Age in the 17th century and became the second largest city of the Netherlands. Many traces of this flourishing era are still to be found scattered throughout the town, including some of the early canvasses by the Leiden artist Rembrandt, which are preserved in the municipal museum. Leiden’s various museums, concerts, plays, theatrical exhibits and performances are available throughout the city.

Leiden has a population of 114,000, including 10,000 students, most of whom live in the centuries-old heart of the town.  For 423 years, Leiden University has influenced the city of Leiden, providing the attributes of a typical college town. As a result, there is a great variety of cultural, recreational and athletic activities in the city.

Frequent and fast trains carry passengers to other Dutch centers of culture and amusement, such as Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht.  Schipol, the national airport, is 20 minutes by train from Leiden. The Hague, which is the Dutch administrative center and the legal capital of the world, as well as the International Court of Justice, Iran-US Claims Tribunal and International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, are all located near Leiden.
