Criminal Law in the Virtual Context

Course Number: LAW 6936 Credits: 2

The course will look at the emerging growth of virtual environments and the application of criminal law to activities that take place within virtual environments. Some of the issues explored will be regulation of gambling, child pornography, money laundering and other financial fraud. In addition, the class will examine how, in the absence of specific laws, communities develop their own informal legal codes. Any registrant in this class MUST have a computer that can meet the specifications of running the Second Life virtual platform. Specifications for the platform can be found on the website for Second Life, www.secondlife.com. This seminar provides an opportunity to satisfy the Advanced Writing Requirement.
