Levin College of Law

Frank T. Read (Dean, 1981-1988)

Frank Read came to the University of Florida after serving as law professor at Duke University and the University of Tulsa as well as dean of the Indiana University School of Law. During his term as dean of UF’s law school, Read was able to increase quality improvement funding from the Florida Legislature, including the funding needed to build Bruton-Geer Hall. Read overhauled the college’s legal research and writing program, and elevated the nationwide standing of the law school by serving as president of the Law School Admissions Council. By the time Read left UF to become dean of Hastings School of Law in 1988, law school enrollment had grown to just over 1,000 students, and the school offered a student-teacher ratio of 18 to one.
